  2. I only see one problem, the smell! Can you imagine the torture of smelling the drippings off of last nights delicious steak as your trying to hammer? I'd be wanting to feed my face constantly!!! If someone could pass me the A1 sauce please :D
  3. The smart elick in me would like to say that I stand on the cool end of the metal Though I haven't had many projects big enough to need me to stand on them anyway But in reality this is the first time I've heard this term and look forward to hearing more...
  4. I'm curious, since there are diesel forges that have been mentioned... would it be possible to burn a bio diesel? I have studied several plans for changing a diesel truck over to straight filtered vegetable oil and or the process of turning that vegetable oil into a bio diesel. It isn't nearly as hard as one might assume, the biggest draw back I have found in either plan is the burning of the oil is said to make the truck (in this case truck your case maybe forge) smell like french fries. So if the technology is already there for a diesel forge, if a little effort was given, free diesel is possible... oh and they say the vegetable oil salvaged from oriental restaurants is better than a fast food restaurant??? James (uh oh I'm thinking out loud again )
  5. Welcome Rub, Look forward to seeing you around IFI James

  7. After the skillet to the head you might feal a bit BEAT
  8. I looked at your photos and I'd say fix it. Yours is in much better shape than mine. Drill some small holes at the very outer most point in the cracks to keep them from going farther 1/16" or so is plenty. With some new hardware rebolt your blower into place. and that should be fine. As for being hard to crank, these have a ratchet system that can get finicky to say the least especially if they have been lubed with oil (dry graphite works nicely). When you take it apart be sure to watch which way the dogs lay inside the housing and then once you clean it up you'll be able to put it back together (may need an extra hand?) Check and see that your gears are clear of debris a wire brush to remove rust, scale or other foreign material will help keep from having a catch spot. Another place to check (before bolting it back up would be easy) is to see that the blower turns easily. Being in storage for a while it could have just about any kind of nasty inside it (mouse nest, wasp nest, dauber nest) or rust you've knocked loose in your first go??? Of course bad bearings are also a possible problem, but look for the easy stuff first. Another point of catch can be the handle or the linkage from the handle, check to be sure it isn't getting into a bind. The nearly turned over forge is why I stake mine down, though I know my forge fairly well, it keeps from having an aggressive helper dump it over. Any other questions let me know and I'll try and help... James
  9. The frying pan can cause one to fear the dear and surely SEAR the point into ones memory (side note, joking as my bride has never threatened me with a skillet, though I have probably deserved it!)

  11. My rivet forge was cracked when I got it, I drilled a stop hole and put a piece of strap at the same thickness as the cast iron across and bolted it on. This has held for about 12 years many of which was aggressive years of forging. I did not attempt to weld it, this repair was cheap, easy, and doesn't have as much luck required in it... What I have noticed is when I'm bringing the forge up to forge welding temps for very long the crack would "swell" open slightly but the strap would "swell" with it and did not cause further breakage. James
