  1. Can any one tell me what kind of steel is in pallet straping? Is it mild steel and if so is all the strenght of the blade coming from the band saw blades?
  2. Very nice I agree with all the others that it is a beatiful pattern. Nice handles also. Good job dude! William
  3. Mine is "Think at the forge and work at the anvil" I heard that many places but first I think I heard it from Frank Turley :)
  4. Hey irnsrgn Thank you for sharing that info. I enjoyed the reading and need to read again I am sure I missed a few things the first time through. William
  5. Here is a santoku knife I made for my daughter. Some of you might remember me asking "How do I harden this?" Well thanks for your help I finished the knife. The steel is from a large bearing race from a P3 aircraft my daughter works on (She is in the Navy doing avaition electronics and this bearing came from one of "her" planes.) The handle material is mesquite burl from Arizona. Thanks for looking and your imput. I also included a commissioned piece I did of three crosses on a large piece of burl wood that is about 3 feet long. William Weathersby
  6. Very beatiful work, thank you for sharing. William
  7. Thank you and yes I have seen them made with a hot cut just a lot more work
  8. I use to have (before I had computer problems) a template for the cut outs of the steel you make roses out of does any one have a copy of this or know where I can find it? Thanks William
  9. I have made these crosses and mount them on pieces of dessert drift wood to sell at demos. I have also seen marbles melted into the center hole for color. The first one I made for my wife had a pearl colored marble melted in the center because one of her favorite hymns is "I found a pearl of greastest price,"
  10. Thank you Ed I do appreaciate you time in answering my question. I will start to add this step to my work. You also took some time to give me some suggestions on making a tomahowk a few months ago and I did post a picture of it this section titled "some of my work" Thank you again for your willingness to help

He is in a ranger unit and he said they can carry Tomahawks I don't know if he has to take special training or not.
  12. Even fools are thought to be wise when they keep silent; when they keep their mouths shut, they seem intelligent.
  13. A few saying I have heard and have some hanging in my shop are: "Think at the forge work at the anvil." unknown "Because I am a blacksmith." Frank Turley "There is a special place in hell for blacksmiths who beat on cold iron" Frank Turley

  15. A question on the difference between normalizing and annealing when making a knife. My understanding from reading an artical by Ed Caffrey is that Normalizing is heating a blade to non magnetic and allowing it to cool to room temp while setting in a draft free area. This is to allow the internal stress to relax in the metal. Annealing is heating to non magnetic and then placing the blade in a well insolated materal so the blade cools very slowly. This reduces grain size of the steel. My question is would not annealing do the same thing as normalizing? I am not understanding why you need to do both. Thank you for any help in my understanding of this confussing (to me anyway) subject. William

    Some of my work

Rich: I do not remember the count I think it was about 75 then twisted. Ray Rybar made the damascus blank on this first knife while I watched. I then forged the knife blade fom a 1/2" square 3" long blank myself. The handle is mesquite burl wood.
  22. Here is some of my work as you can tell I still have a lot to learn but learning and expermenting is most of the fun. The first is a pic of a small skinner then a picture of a camp knife I still use when doing dutch oven cooking both of them were made from a train sping. The third is my first damascus knife which I made in a class taught by Ray Rybar a Master bladesmith. Finally is a tomahawk I made from a torsion bar for my Nephew who is in a ranger unit in Afganistan. Thanks for looking, any comments welcome
  23. What is holier then God more evil than Satan The rich want it The poor have it and if you eat it you will die. What is it?
  24. I have been told to go from an oxidizing (hope I spelled that right) fire to a reducing fire the fire needs to be 5" deep. (A reducing fire has all the oxygen burned out so you get less scale and a better weld.) Is this correct and if it is wouldn't that dictate how deep to make your fire pot?
