I-beam or square tubing for hammer?

a sound engineering idea as mentioned a box girder offers considerably better resistance to torsion (and you can fill it) looks good ;) -
Let's talk about a solid-fuel biomass forge
Ice Czar replied to Archie Zietman's topic in Induction Heating, Oil forges, etc
an even more advanced (crazy) biomass forge (and smelter) is what the DOD is trying to develop for energy production. Its chemical looping combustion. The DOD is actually trying to combine the proven design with Fischer-Tropsch process to turn the hydrogen into diesel and jet fuel and scale it all for remote base energy production. Diversified Energy Bioenergy pact between Europe and Africa there are quite a few patents involved but 6110239 (pat2pdf) is the main one your primary products are hydrogen, carbon monoxide (Syngas), secondary products are molten steel, cement, the capture of sulphur from any dirty carbon fuel stock. runs on coal, coke, biomass, waste, tires ect. the Tin in the mix has an affinity for sulfur in the fuel stock, other trace metals are captured by the steel not to completely sidetrack the thread :p -

Biomass will simply burn rather than char, due to the excess available oxygen. Scavenging the fume gas from the forge to first dry then char the biomass, then feeding it to the firepot makes more sense. Employing the wood gas produced by the pyrolysis stage to boost the heat in the firepot is another refinement. A close coupled gasifier (that also acts as a recuperator) whose flue gas is then mixed with oxygen and reintroduced to the firepot. the images show flue gas being employed to dry and char a biomass stack while I cant access the full description based on the title Id guess at some point in that solution they are also introducing steam to a hot charcoal bed to crack it into hydrogen. -

see Id still vote for the Little Giant, especially since Ive spent so much time dancing to avoid the flying parts when they break loose :p now I havent personally seen one put a hole through the guard, but there where several nice holes in the guard from before I started, when we got the 100lb LG the guards went from serious wire mesh to thick steel plate -
its primarily there as a a surfactant/wetting agent (so is the soap) Surfactants: Detergent Chemistry there is one good reason to employ Shaklee however Products derived from natural, nontoxic ingredients -- once seen as fringe -- are now mainstream. LA Times thats not to say Basic is one of those green surfacants....

Plasma nitriding - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Gas and Liquid Bath Nitriding Gas Nitriding or diffusion nitriding or ammonia (diffusion) nitriding has been around for nearly a century. It is a simple and inexpensive method for surface hardening of 'nitriding alloys' i.e. alloy steels with nitride forming elements and other metals e.g. aluminium, chromium, molybdenum and titanium to name but a few. Liquid bath nitriding or salt bath nitriding on the other hand is not a classical nitriding technique but rather a carbo-nitriding technique, since it employs rather toxic salts of sodium cyanide. These salts break up at high processing temperatures, as high as 510 degrees Celsius up to 610 degrees Celsius depending upon various factors. This technique produces only a thin 'chemical compound zone' which is hardly 4 to 10 micrometres thick, with no underlying hardened sub-surface. In developed nations, the use of such toxic salts is banned, whilst the process thrives in the Third World without any restrictions, or circumvention of slack laws and regulations. ect

if the objective is turn and burn Ride The Continental Divide by Karl Zuercher Ride the Divide, 15 Passes in 1 Day, 1000 Miles - by Randy Bishop (partial) every paved pass over the continental divide in Colorado, in order from north to south or vice versa can be done in 4 days but a slower pace will be far more scenic if you have issues with attitude sickness, nevermind probably a good idea to have your bike tuned up locally as well for altitude riding

errr...copper is annealed by heat just like steel, whether you quench it or not doesnt matter, its quicker to get back to working it, but it can cool slowly and still be annealed Annealing (metallurgy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

think you might want to be more specific we use a brass wire wheel on hot steel to get a gold finish, and I havent noticed a black finish employing a stainless steel wheel (but then the stock wasnt at that high a temperature either)

assuming that 3 phase is available, because phase converters are also pricey If your going to employ a Variable Frequency Drive Id highly suggest you provide it a nice cool dust free home, At the shop when ours finally fried, it wasnt replaced. ($700) 3 Phase Inverters Home Made 3 Phase (disclaimer: Have no idea how well this may work)

how did you get started smithing?
Ice Czar replied to steveh's topic in Blacksmithing, General Discussion
sideways, by wheedling my way into an apprenticeship with no real smithing experience. (but a strong art and sculpture background and the right attitude)
