  1. welcome to the forum and post away. we do try to use the features in the posting window, so they auto thumbnail. Many places in the world still have bandwidth issues, dial up, etc. Photobucket at times looses photos leaving meaningless threads, and very large photos when it does work.
  2. photo here and NO its not for circles, you are thinking jewelry mill, this is a scaled down steel mill, for rolling billets, and blanks, changing stock sizes.
  3. its the annual Indiana Blacksmith Assoc, gathering.and I could not attend, even tho its close :(

You dont have to have a horn. I bet that it still works.
  5. Not sure I agree with that, if there is enough on the anvil to really insulate, then its also a cushion for the working force.
  6. well basically put what you need where you need it. anvil close to heat source is best. think about vise as well.
  7. no but I did build one. The address is: Hugh McDonald 150 Williams Rd. Gooseberry Hill 6076 Western Australia Price: 25.00$ US plus S&H Also availble as a download from: http://www.anvilfire.com/sales/pages/rolling-mill.htm
  8. Very tactfully put Sensei. never knew ya had it in you :)
  9. dont forget that once again we have the issue of what you think is yellow vs what I call yellow heat. JPH talks a lot about that problem, an example is his description of how he welds at a cherry red heat, I cant weld at what I call that color. either way, we do seem to agree he was too hot and scrap that blade.
  10. We all have our ways to do things, however I stand behind my statement of welding temps are not good for general forging of higher carbon steels because of increased grain growth, scaling and risk of burning is an issue. All these are things a new smith should not have to worry about with all the other things he needs to learn. About the oxides, if they are their already? how can you prevent it, if the Oxygen has joined with the steel...
  11. doing things like that could get one a nomination for a Darwin award.
  12. Way too hot for carbon steels. that is about welding temp. orange to red is plenty for non and low alloy steels
  13. A basic set of guide lines is all at the top of this section, sticky posts, for dealing with this, so I don't have to keep repeating the same stuff. Link to... sticky info : http://www.iforgeiron.com/forum/56-knife-stickies-here/
  14. what does forging with out cracking have to do with not normalizing? Keep reading, there is a lot more to this than you seem to understand. For one you are lucky it didnt crack from the row of gouges you left from grinding in the blade edge, those are all stress risers. The white spots could be from the oil, read more, and keep trying, and then read more :)
  15. Like much everything else, its worth what ever someone is willing to pay to have it. People do not pay much for RR spikes made into cutting tool's. It may be fun to make them, but no real usage for them when made of poor metal, that even the best work with these does not get much money, Keep practicing, you will get better, but there is not much sales value in them, Call this a learning experience.
  16. those are neat Richard, Velcum to za Dak Side! B)
  17. we call that 15N20 what is Mu ? not familiar with that...
  18. if your screwdriver bits are plated you are risking poisoning. also they are too small a mass for a beginner to hope to weld, wont hold the heat long enough. Welcome to the forum
  19. Water doesn't get hot enough to temper any steel, it boils off at 212, only under high pressure can it get any hotter???
  20. C 0.98-1.20 Si 0.15-0.35 Mn 0.25-0.45 P 0.025 max S 0.015 max Cr 1.40-1.60 Ni 0.25 max Cu 0.30 max FYI to be a stainless it needs at least 12.5% free chrome, not total content but chrome not bound up in carbides, This is why D-2 is not a stainless.
  21. 52100 is not stainless, but a very nice steel, and last I looked its a bit above 1% carbon :)
  22. I am not from Norway. BUT my mothers parents were! welcome to the nut house
