  1. I'll add a question in here too. If a carbon steel knife will not be used for a while, do you coat the blade with anything to keep it from rusting? Peanut or vegi oil maybe?

  5. Seems a shame to have all that great equipment there & no one to use it. I'm sure I could find uses for most of it!
  6. How cool is that! What a great hammer you have there JR. I wish I had one too.
  7. Although I'm still new at this, I'm going to add my two cents worth. I would have to go along with MooseRidge in that most people's idea of a blacksmith comes from movies & TV. Most kids today don't remember the old westerns that showed blacksmiths doing more "traditional" work. Horse shoes, tools, wagons, etc, etc..... I think that the key might be educating those that you see & talk with. Most of the examples today seem to come from movies depicting blacksmiths making weapons, etc. That's probably because most movies today action based with violence in them......... I think it will take patience & education from those who are out there showing their craft to the public........... Just my thoughts.
  8. Do you happen to have pics? I'd love to see it.

  11. If I remember correctly. The series started as one book, then went to the three volume set that Makoz mentioned. I have the first book and also the No.5 book mentioned. I will be receiving the three volume set from a sister in law in the future. They are indeed a wealth of information. I envy anyone in that area of the country. The people mentioned in the books did so much with so little that it makes your head spin.
  12. What you could also use is a metal floor flange bolted or welded to the inside of the brake drum. Mine had a 2" threaded hole on the inside where I just screwed on a threaded pipe nipple. You can get them with different ID hole sizes, depending on what size pipe you are connecting. Brake Drum Fire Pot - Blacksmith Photo Gallery
  13. I'm ashamed to say that I've never tried that. Will definitely have to though. And none of us are perfect. God never asked us to be perfect. Just to believe, trust & follow. Thanks.

  17. John, sorry to hear about your troubles. Nothing any of us says will make you happy, but, at least you did have a source for a new motor and you did have the profits from your railing job to use. Hang in there........ Thomas, sorry to hear about your troubles as well. No one ever said thieves were smart.
