burger------- I may be wrong----but it appears the spike you have in the hardie hole may be tapered for trouble-----a few good smacks could seperate your heel. yt

There are wiser minds than mine----but one guess has to be that the face was milled at one point.

Side note----appears your tool in the hardy is a straight taper----may not be wise----might only take a few whacks to lose your heel.

luckily,have several options on that front----was pure curiosity----Im sure all types of remedies have been attempted,was opening the discussion to anecdotal stories-----anyone have luck building up w/weld ? attaching a new tip ?

Not sure how long my new Wilkinson (?!) will be under my roof, but Im guessing as long as it is,will probably keep its shortened stature. But it got me thinking ----to restore the horn,options are probably 1) build it up w new weld 2) weld on a prosthetic 3) get out the grinder. Just curious----any anecdotal stories for "re-horning" ? hits ? misses?

Rusty----you may be on to it----found an old auction photo of a Wilkinson,could be this ones brother,sans nose job. Trademark seems to reflect "Queens Cross" ----also seem to be able to read "PATENT"---- Thanks !!

Well, As I said----I posted a few photos of anvil yesterday ( a new new one) and I was hoping for a bit of help with an id. I seem to be having some issues re-posting the photo of what is left of the makers mark----I will continue to try. If I have made this too difficult, please disregard.

I posted a few shots yesterday of a recent find ( a new new one)------not much left of the makers mark----first clue----2 overlapped ovals, apx 1 1/2'" x 1/4 " --------looks like 2 bandaids crossed on top of each other-------any ideas ? THANKS !!!!!

Well----they ARE out there. Always said clist is home to alot of uberpriced gear---Still, I have a handful of things I check for on a daily basis. Less than a year ago,a 5 minute old post led to a 130 lb Hill at a super price------About 1 1/2 months ago another post popped up. 70 lbs,a nose job---and 10 minutes away! Sent a response and waited---no message back for a day--- 2 days---3--------after awhile I assumed the anvil was sold and the seller just forgot to remove the post.But I still sent a message....every day. "hello----if you still have the anvil,I would love to take a look ! " not much more not much less------for a week--2 weeks----6 weeks (hey,its the way of my people)-----out o the blue----the call----"sorry for no response,life got in the way,still interested ?"----was on my way. Got there, we both agreed was heavier than 70---great ring and rebound,nose job was a negotiating detail. Seller a good guy---his company does design work and they have 2 bigger anvils they play with (gotta invite myself for a visit)---10 minutes later----back o the truck. Havent wire brushed it yet and the only visible marks (so far) " ******T'S ****** and 2 intersecting ovals. threw it on the scale----130 lbs ! and under a buck a pound !

Right angle grinder with wire brush----spot on for the job w no damage----BUT----EYE PROTECTION IS A MUST -----these things can be evil !

A plumbing re-hab some time ago left me w a 12 ft stick of 3 inch copper----cut it into 2 footers and split them length-wise----using a small sledge with a smooth face and an upright chunko firewood-----opened them up and flattened them----a workout !!!!---as it is easier to polish than age-----have left them in the elements---BEAUTIFUL patina !!!----too many projects too little time......

Wasnt thinking-----when I had the rail head top milled-----should have also milled the bottom of the head as well----would have been nice for clamping.

she IS smarter,younger and when I say "better looking" ---I am not giving full credit.

ok---maybe not---but darn handy !-----Over the years I have ended up with a number of pieces of RRR---a local shop gave me the "good guy discount" to mill the top flat. The smarter half uses it for jewelry and I have used it for dozens of "non-smith" chores. Downside for me---the 3rd generation family machine shop that milled it just closed their doors.

Thomas---that seems the case,must have been a doozy of a scrapping contract,and I understand their reluctance for outsiders----doesnt mean I wont keep looking for the one guy with the right answer !-----the photo does NOT give justice to the sheer volume of potential "improvised anvils"------as far as the eye can see !!!!

And a heads up to T Powers---Columbus Castings is no more--once one of the largest foundry operations,much directed to the RR industry-----now leveled.The tooling long gone,I have made a number of attempts to "get in and take a look"------hoping to lead to----hey, mind if i throw a few of those ol rusty hunks o junk in the truck ! ---it truly was the mother lode ---acres and tons headed to the scrapper---blocks/slabs/gears/cut offs/chunks-------they keep giving me the wrong answer-----so far !!

a local architectural firm was re-locating------hit the auction trifecta----stakes,spikes ....and a lamp. apx 70 pieces of 1 inch rounds x 30 inches my guess 4140 ? they were listed as "stakes"----a nice old crate w/apx 200 RR spikes ! (most stamped HC) ----and a lamp ! ----no one else had much interest,got the lot for 18 bucks-------as Im loading up,a gent asked if i would part w 10 of the rounds----I threw out 2 bucks a piece ? sold ! paid for my stuff and gas !!

daswulf-----your kettlebell post triggered a flashback----coupla years ago i was taking a load to the re-cycler---i always ask if there is anything of interest headed to the smelter----blacksmith stuff/chain/dumbbells/etc-------turns out that among the pile of hex head chinese dumbbells------a pair of old 50 lb york round dumbells---the classics----got a bit of a deal----.25/lb------25 bucks for the pair-------turns out that the stamping in them confirmed they were "vintage"----and-----the arnold classic was in town -----posted on "whatsitlist"----and yes,confirms ---people collect anything------sold the pair for $175 !!!!

local on line auction-----brand new for a Tahoe that retail @ 80 bucks a pop. 4 pieces----2 ....1/2 inch.....2 3/4 inch. $3 bucks a piece !

Be safe,but dont over-think it----I rough milled ALOT of big sticks over the years---ripped ALOT always with standard chain-----ya gotta love making those french fries !!
