She really is a beauty--90 ish rebound---sweet ring with no dull spots and the face still has the factory finish marks !!!!!!.As a teaser--------I need to get the camera ready for 2 "it followed me home" stories 1) my Trentons ---150 lb/90 lb 2) the mother of all scrap recoveries ---including 120 lbs of Blackbird Titanium.

Frosty----Thanks for that reply, that is part of my plan.On the downside---the shop is over-loaded in ALOT of ways, lacking in others, such as anything able to do this slicing. The blocks are 4" thick !----I will get it done !!

    rare ti ?

Good day all-----part of my "mother of all followed me homes" was 2 60 lb blocks of titanium. This was part of an estate sale of a renowned fabricator/machinist/testor metallurgist ---the gentlemans widow confirmed he did a good bit of military and aviation testing decades ago and one of these blocks is marked for Lockheed. My preliminary scan shows ti @ 88.76 fe @ .607 v @4.77-------what are the chances this was destined for the SR71 ?----i have had a devil of a time confirming the specific alloy/alloys used back then----anyone have any insight/guesses ?----all just a curiosity on a quiet Sunday ! Thanks !!
  6. Biggun-----good info,thanks !!
  7. Thank you all for the input,it is appreciated---some testing on the horizon. Will add,I too just brought home a handfull of Nicholson BDs---HD had them in their double secret clearance pile----buck and change for the 10 inchers---these are hecho in mexico, not getting glowing reports on-line,but for the price I had to grab them.
  8. Good day all-----have a small pile of old files and rasps looking for new lives.I was curious if IN GENERAL there was a difference in materials used for metal files, wood rasps, farrier rasps ?----Now before anyone beats me up,I learned long ago measure 3 times,if yer gonna shoot, shoot dont talk and test every metal as new----but,IN GENERAL---in the olden days, any benchmark for farrier rasp vs metal bastard for content ? Thanks in advance.
  9. It is a chunk !!!----part of the mother of all "it followed me homes".I need to put some photos together, was a mixed bag and a treasure trove and made my truck cry. Tires are not commercial, but in good shape and didnt blow---had that at even money.I will tell a tale.Saw a notice for an estate sale,2 things caught my eye "large vise--scrap metal"---and not far away.I was off.Driving past the front of the house,I expected little---a tiny pillbox shoehorned into a mostly residential neighborhood.Around back, the shop was 4 times the size of the house. One of the 2 double bay doors had a massive overhead trolley hoist. Most of the equip had been sold prior to the auction, but decades of wear on the floor outlined where a dozen massive pieces of machinery once sat.Evidentily, the gentleman who passed away was a renowned machinist/fabricator who also tested and heat treated for many around the world including Lockheed and Battelle. The vise went above my pay grade---but the scrap !! TONS of scrap--tons of tons. And tons.Rods, slabs, sheet, cut offs, drops, ingots and chunks. The scrap lined both shop walls 25 feet long and 2 deep !!.I cant fault them for not breaking the metal into lots (would still be there today)---but they only split it into 2 lots and 2 of the local scrappers split the deal.I buddied up to 1 and asked if I could cherry pick a few pieces before his helper showed up---"SURE".I went for the odd ball stuff--half dozen round drops (machined ends) all lengths 8-12" diam 8-12" -- doz 4 foot rounds diam1-2" huge chunk C1--2 ft round of 6" 76% ni 15%cr-----2 60 lb chunks of "grey stuff"---and a bunch of other heavy stuff---my ton plus didnt put a dent in a dent.Asked how much---and my guy said "you tell me"---I thought I would start the ball rolling by giving him a chuckle,so I said 30 bucks---he said "its all yours !"----I crept home.Wasnt till I got home and scraped a few decades of dust off the "grey stuff" that I saw the marking "ti"---88%ti 4% v !!!---I can only imagine what those 2 scrappers hauled off to the scales !!----Now I just need to figure out what to do with it all !!!

  11. Thank you for the responses----it is appreciated. As it may not be feasible to get an accurate test done ,I may be putting a hammer to it.FWIW----I stated H as 24"--meant 12"---sometimes my brain doesn't type what my fingers are thinking. Thanks again.
  12. Good day all-----I have a block 14" x 14" x 24" stamped C1---I havent yet done a complete test on the piece, but assuming C1----worth slabbing into more useable size ? or,as all sides are true, worth hammering on ? Thanks in advance !!!!
  13. Thank you for the feed back,it is appreciated.I was not on my A game when I had the pieces tested----will get them scoped for carbon and go from there---Thanks again !!
  14. Good Day All-----I have acquired a quantity of "test samples"-----pieces 1" x 3 "x 1/8 and 1/4.These were acquired at an auction held to settle an estate. The big 3 are 85.5% fe 7.6% ni 4% co----I was considering them as edge inserts for axe heads/knife blades.Worth the effort ?!?!.I call them test samples as the gentleman whose estate they came from was a respected fabricator/tester for many, including Lockheed and Battelle. As time permits,I may post a "it followed me home"-----you may not like me after reading it !!! Thank you in advance.
