The best way to practice forging and learn how metal moves with what type of blow and what tools do what and so on is to practice using clay, it moves just like hot metal only easier and you don't need a fire. Where are you in NJ? welder19

They are one of the best things to use for smaller stuff since they are usually free and of decent quality and I have never seen one that was plated. welder19

If you do leather work then I would suggest making it like you planed, the average aprons you buy today are pretty low quality and don't hold up that long, but if you got your self some good quality leather and made it yourself it would probably last a long time and therefore being cheaper in the long run, heck, you could probably make a few and sell them and make yourself some $$ to help finance your new hobby. As for steel, definately look for leaf and coil springs & axles are your higher quality junk yard sources as well as rams out of hydraulic cylinders. welder19

Take the design and make it as heavy as you need, and like Sam said build it out of steel. Looks like a decent design. welder19

Depends, if it is a machine/fabrication shop, then yeah, that's a heck of alot of steel, but if it is for steal structures/buildings, then that's not so much. Especialy with the price of steel these days :mad: welder19

I mostly buy from a steel yard, they sell all new steel and tools and also used tools, equipment, etc, but if I want specific stock like tool steel and such then I have a guy I know who owns a machine shop so I have him order it or sometimes he'll have xtra that he will sell me. welder19

I am right handed and my horn points right, but that is just the way it is when I turn from the forge to anvil, you will work on all sides of it depending on what the project needs. Basically position it which ever is most comfortable for you, your the one that is working at it. Good luck welder19

That's cool, I love old family stuff, I have a great colection of tools, guns and various artifacts from my grandfathers, some of it is totally worthless in $ value but to me, there isn't enough money in the world to replace it. There is something about using something that your ancestors used, it can't really be described. When I shoot my grandfathers gun or when I ride his Harley, it just isn't like anything else, I ride my bike and it's just another ride, but on his it's special. I say go for it, no matter what it takes to restore it, you won't regret it. welder19
