  1. Nice, if only my rich uncle would have written my into his will before he died. oh wait I have/had no rich uncles or any other reletives for that matter. maybe one day I can win the lottery. then I'll be able to afford one of those new fancy powered hammers and a shop big enough to hold a few more tools. One can dream can't he
  2. those shipwright videos, I only have one word to say. humbling. to think those huge anchors were hand forged, be it by many hands. what a task.
  3. avoid the valves, I've heard bad things can happen. as for casting for a knife, not a good idea IMO to use cast metal for a knife. round or bar stock makes a good blade though. if you have access to a mechanics shop for their leftovers, then I would suggest looking for leaf springs for blades. others may offer more suggestions on how you might uses cast metal for a blade though
  4. playing with fire and hitting things with hammers, hmmm. that might explain why i got married (a second time) and bought a fixer upper for a house. what do ya thing frosty?
  5. Nice design, I think I need to copy that design. I have most of the materials already except the anvil. I dont have any decnet anvils except for my RR coupler I used under my hand hammer.
  6. I tried that with copper and ended up breaking yet another blade. it seems that now I have more broken than completed blades.
  7. not a bad idea. I think I might try that one.
  8. Back in my boyscout days a few of our scoutmasters carries similar neck knives, and the easiest way we found to make them safe for daily wear was to put a sheath around the closed knife. something you could easily pull off when the knife is needed.
  9. beautiful! I don't think there is anything else to say, just beautiful. I love the pattern especially at the tip.
  10. clinton nice anvil in the back ground by the bucket. if you don't need it I'ld be glad to move it out of you way free of charge.lol seriously nice homemade anvil thingy looks useful
  11. welcome chris, if you have any questions or need any help, just ask. there are many of us on here who are willing to give any advice we can. Also if you will add your location to your personal profile info then we can point you towards tools and materials. there is always someone who find an anvil or some hammers for sale nearby and they don't need them. I keep telling everyone to just buy them and ship them to me, but no one seems to want to listen.lol
  12. the discussion was orininally about my lincoln 225 ac welder I got from my gradparents, and my intention to get a wire welder in the future. I'm just considering the chicago electric wire welders being sold by harbour freight, or save longer and get a lincoln wirefeed welder that is adaptable to a mig. then these guys started ading in their two cents and the converation started drifting...no big deal, I like to see where they end up, besides I got the info I needed already..lol ok guys continue, mig welder with shield gas, running flux core wire. sounds interesting tell me more.
  13. I've seen several YouTube videos where people hav said those types of burners make a good forge, though I've never tried it.
  14. i did forget about amps thanks...and as for the magic smoke... i quit smoking years ago I would like to keep it that way. lol liek i said i have between 6-18 months before i get a wire welder so who knows what i will find.

    Tanto

onwe of most beautiful things about mistake is they can turn out better than the intended idea. keep going see where the steel leads you. and don't forget the pictures.please.
  16. I will check craigslist for a brand name welders, but the HF welder im looking at is a 110v 45% dutycycle hobbyist flux core only welder for only $100. I will eventually get a heavy duty(larger percentage dutycycle) brand name mig welder, but I want to get it new when I get the money to do so. I do most of my metal work without welds if possible anyway. your probably right phil, and since I have 6-18 months before I get a wire welder, who knows i might just say to hell with it and go straight for the new mig setup.
  17. Anvil abuse!!! that guy needs to go to AA. Anvil abusers anonomous. It is his anvil so he can do with it as he pleases, but couldn't he shoot aso's instead of quality anvils. If his wife needs a place to store those anvils once he's gone, I can start taking shipment for storage today..lol
  18. later this year or early next year, I'm going to buy a wire type welder, and I'm looking at a harbour freight flux core welder they have them pretty cheap. those welders have a descent duty cycle for a home welder 45% I know a brand name welder would serve me better, but all I need it a small project welder for now. I will eventually get a good brand name mig setup and a tig capable stick welder, but those are several years off.
  19. I got a welder in my miniscule shop today. I've been talking to myfamily about looking for a good welder and my grandmother told me to take my late grandfathers welder home with me. I had to run about 80 feet of wire put in a new 50 amp breaker and an outlet. Now my new/old lincoln ac-225 welder is in my shop and work like a champ. Now I know i would be happier with a ac/dc welder or a wire type welder, but this one was free and now my granddads tools won't rust away from non-use.

    Tanto

The blade shape is more of a drop point and it looks like a kithchen knife of maybe a hunter, instead of a having the angular shape of a tanto. however, Very nice blade. I would love to see the finished product.
  21. I would suggest as close a fit as humanly possible with pins drilled and pressed into place.
  22. hey your old teach told me to tell you happy birthday. and next time you drop in by the pits of hades, Hephaestus said he would show you some of his new work. happy birthday, and blessed be
  23. I've seen several peopl ewho have done this same thing before. One man in a ship yard dropped his welding mask into the water, insteads of losing the time to get a new mask, made something similar from a spare set of welding goggles and a sheet of sand paper another craftsman had on hand.
  24. your right i missed a key...it should have been hoo-ah ......as for the lower case letters i'm too lazy sometimes to hit the shift key, my beret was marron/red i actually still have now after 6 years, I keep on the shelf next to my computer. Gotta love hijacked threads, just becareful someone doesn't send the seal teams in to take it back. hurry up and wait...sounds familiar, I heard that all too often back in my lrs days(long range surveilence).I have no idea if thats right or not, but until I hear otherwise, why not. I spent time with the 1/278th ACR(armoured cav) as well as 212MI (you know "MI" missing intellegence, oh wait I mean military intellegene)as part of their 121inf lrs airborne detachment. gotta love those radios, every unit uses them and it made me a jack of all trade so to speak. I could go to any unit and work with them because they all had radios.
