  1. A while back I had a bucket of wheel weights find it's way into the truck of the car on the way home. I finally got tired of the bucket splitting the weights spilling onto the floor. Now the lead can be stacked on a shelf, somewhere, as I have not figured out just where to put 150 pounds of lead ingots. Maybe paint them gold, box them up in 50 pounds to a box, and hide the boxes in deep storage for someone to find one day. (grin)
  2. Thanks Alan, I remember your amazement when the forge was brought up to forge welding temperature. And when the demo was over your looking at the forge stand very carefully, inspecting for damage, and finding NO DAMAGE at all. (grin)
  3. I designed and built the 55 Forge, the Side Blast 55 Forge, and the Supercharged 55 Forge. They were designed in such a way that most anyone in the world can get the parts to make the forge. The forges will work with solid fuels, and have been tested with soft coal, coke, fresh cut wood, seasoned wood, and wooden pallets. They are inexpensive to construct, can be built quickly using minimal tools, and they work. Several people have built the 55 Forges. Several more have modified the design to make similar forges. As how the 55 Forge works, the answer would be very well.
  4. The Junior, Senior designation is based on the number of posts made. I don't recall the exact amount as it was set a while ago.
  5. Racer3j Go to the bottom of the forum and click on archive. It will display a directory tree. Click on a section, then a sub section. There may be several pages (listed at the top of the page) so do not think everything is shown on the first page displayed. Click on a thread, sit down for a spell and enjoy the archives. A cold drink and a sandwich are recommended, you may be a while. (grin)
  6. IForgeIron has several Administrators and Moderators. The moderators they have been given the responsibility and authority to do what is best for the site. The moderators real names are not published, as their actions are not personal in nature, but a function of IForgeIron. If you have any issues with the actions of a moderator, report them directly to me. But be advised that the Moderator has already emailed me reporting any action they take, and most likely that action is already under review by the site administrators.
  7. Anhydrous Ammonia and Propane Cylinders It has come to the attention of the National Propane Gas Association that propane cylinders are being used in the manufacturing of Methamphetamines. This drug is commonly referred to as 'crank'. Manufacturers of this illegal substance are using propane cylinders for the storage and the use of anhydrous ammonia. These cylinders have been found in many states at cylinder exchange and refilling locations as well as in hotel rooms and mobile laboratories, where the manufacturing of this illegal substance takes place. As observed in the illustrations, a blue-green stain on any brass portion of a service valve is evidence that it may have been in contact with anhydrous ammonia*. The pungent odor of ammonia on or near the cylinder is also an indication. If you suspect that a propane cylinder contains or has contained anhydrous ammonia, exercise extreme caution and restrict access to the area. Read the rest of the article ---> and ----> It can be dangerous to move the cylinder due to the unknown integrity of the cylinder's service valve. click hereclick here
  8. Why send folks to other sites? Utilize the resources on IForgeIron as this is where he ask the question. John Jobe has a set of treadle hammer plans on sale through the IForgeIron store. The Blueprints have several listings for hammers, treadle and mechanical as I recall.
  9. I read over the 27 page report on Internet Security and will suggest the following: IForgeIron requests a real working email address in order to contact you if needed. This would including site verification purposes, to be sure you are you, and to provide answers to questions more quickly than your next log in. IForgeIron requests your location (state or country) so we have some idea where you live and can adjust the answers to be more helpful. No use telling you there is a free anvil at the corner of walk and don't walk (choose-a-country) if you are on the other side of the world. I have seen the IForgeIron community grow, and have seen new people with a sincere desire to learn get help and assistance, and lots of it. I personally know of more than one now accomplished blacksmith that has learned blacksmithing from the internet. Blacksmithing, and bladesmithing are both very dangerous. As blacksmith or bladesmith, we weigh the risk against the reward. There is no guarantee in life or on the internet. If you feel your identity may be compromised on any website, may I suggest you not visit that site. If you feel your identity or your computer may be compromised by using the internet, then unplug the internet from your computer. Leather aprons, and safety glasses are just as important as firewalls, and anti-virus programs. Only you can make the proper decision for you.
  10. KnarfleTheGarthock Go to the top of the forum page, click on user cp, your profile, edit your details, enter your location and save. We request this information as IForgeIron is visited by over 50 world wide counties each month, and it helps us in providing you answers in your area. IForgeIron is a family forum and will not tolerate personal attacks. If you have used the site, you understand this already. We do not mind answering questions, but we try to correct myths, and expose Hollywood hype as such, a dis-service those interested in metalworking, and the real world. To increase your knowledge on knives, swords, and sharp and pointy things, may I suggest you join in on the IForgeIron Friday Night LIVE Chat at 10 pm eastern time US. It is a non structured question and answer session run by some experienced and knowledgeable knife makers. Any book by James Hrisoulas would be well worth reading, and he has written 3-4 of them. Welcome to IForgeIron, enjoy your visit.
  11. Currently, there are about 90 active coal-mining operations in 15 eastern Ohio counties. The leading coal-producing counties in decreasing order are Belmont, Harrison, Tuscarawas, Athens, and Jefferson. Although there are about 50 named coal beds or seams in Ohio, only a few are of sufficient thickness and extent to be mined. Most production comes from the Pittsburgh (No.8) coal seam. Contact Thomas Powers, as he moved from that area.
  12. The concern of damage is NOT to YOUR vehicle. If the PVC is strapped to a roof rack and you have to emergency stop, you have created a launching tube for a missile. Some 4 inch PVC drain pipe under the SUV seats keeps the inside of the vehicle clean and keeps things contained so they do not roll around.

  14. 3m 4941 is a closed cell acrylic foal with a acrylic adhesive on both sides. 50% of strength upon application, 100% strength (1000 psi) at 72 hours. Application at room temp (above 55*F), and weathers very well. 3M™ VHB™ Tapes provide the convenience and simplicity of a tape fastener and are ideal for use in many interior and exterior bonding applications. In many situations, they can replace rivets, spot welds, liquid adhesives and other permanent fasteners. Tapes are made with acrylic foam which is viscoelastic in nature, which gives the foam energy absorbing and stress relaxing properties which provides these tapes with their unique characteristics. The acrylic chemistry provides outstanding durability performance.
  15. Why not look into industrial adhesives. They have glues for steel to steel application, and if I remember the TV program correctly, the glue bond holds and the steel tears.
  16. Cats like to use coal piles also. Don't ask how I know these things.
  17. Dress for the occasion, full leathers - leather chaps, leather spats, leather apron, leather gloves, steel toed boots, long sleeves, long pants, full face shield, eye protection (think shade 3 or shade 5 goggles), ear plugs, fire extinguisher, first aid for burns, cell phone pre-programmed speed dial, etc. Melt more metal than you will use during the pour. Yes it is a pain, but not near as painful as something going wrong and hot molten metal being splashed all over you AND the work area. Be careful, and play safe.
  18. Mark, Thank you for your permission. I appreciate your working with IForgeIron to promote blacksmithing.
  19. Beside the forge I have a *real anvil*, and a 3 foot section of rail road track. I choose which tool is best for the job at hand. Currently the rail is tipped over onto it's side so the curve between the under side of the rail section and the web of the track can be used as a swage block. Figure out how to use the tool you have. When you think you have thought of everything, another smith will use the same tool differently and in a way you never imagined.
  20. Aluminum is sometimes alloyed with magnesium. When this alloy is heated, the magnesium ignites and makes a much more intense danger.

  23. Use the materials available to make SOMETHING that works as a forge and get started. Different fuels require different forge designs. Different size stock (3/8 inch vs 3 inch) requires different size forges. The blacksmith will use (or build) a forge to suit the job at hand. No one ever said you could have just ONE FORGE. The forge is just a tool to do a job.
