Hot Cuts, Anvil devils, metal cutting on the anvil.

While digging about to get pics of some old anvils, I decided to get a few pics of this old Hot-Cut shear. Whomever made it put some style and grace into making it - besides the functionality and leverage. He even beveled a bolt through the base plate to fit just under the inside lip on your post vice and help lock it in place during use. He never made it to bolt to some workbench - just to be clamped into a leg vice for use. Such a simple tool, but the guy put that extra effort into it. I went to visit some friends on Saturday and we stopped off at a shop that sells bankrupt stock. They had quite a bit of top branded stuff at good prices including "Eclipse" branded cold chisels and crowbars. I bought a couple of 1/2 x 10 and a 1/2 x 12 as I thought they might come in handy but was wondering what else I can make out of them? Is the steel likely to be good enough for punching or drifting in hot steel? I hate to pass up a bargain so if you guys can come up with a list of some stuff I can make then I'll buy some more next time I'm visiting! Also, are the crowbars likely to be the same steel as the chisels?

What is the average height for a hot cut?

In woodworking we have marking gauges which are an adjustable rod with a pin and a fence. And we also have center line scribes. Neither of them work very well for small pieces of metal such as that used in knife making. Are there comparable tools in metal working?

i would need some help about material for hot chisels.What i have yet, i made of an old drill,hss material.Although the heat treating is a challenge(im not experienced in smithing),it succeeded so far,that the piece didnt break,and able to use.What material is ok,(junkyard,used stuff),and how to treat it?Possibly not the most difficoult way:rolleyes:.Thanks for help in advance

Hello All, I am starting to make more of my own hardy tools & jigs "And Loving It!" They are not great but they are getting better and seem to work pretty well. Looking for Ideas and a bit of direction I would really love to see some pics and Ideas for hardy tools and other neat tools and gadgets I can forge or forge & weld up for my blacksmithing.
