Cammie1314
Hi there, new to the forum. Just found this item in a barn at my wife's uncles farm. Any ideas? Any info greatly appreciated.
Frosty
Welcome aboard Cammie, glad to have you. If you'll put your general location in the header you might be surprised how many members live within visiting distance. You've got me on that one. My first thought was some sort of pintle but the drive point isn't long enough to be very secure and the size of the round section makes me think it'd be a large hinge. Makes that first impression doubtful in my mind. I'm thinking it could be used as a stake anvil but again we get to that relatively short but wide spike. I'm thinking it'd want to work loose pretty easily in use. I have no idea what it was made for. Anybody? Frosty The Lucky.
Nobody Special
Doesn't look quite even across the top, any wear or hammer marks as a clue?
Irondragon Forge ClayWorks
Welcome to IFI. Have you read this yet? It will help you get the best out of the forum. READ THIS FIRST What is the size/weight of it? Like Frosty, I doubt it's a stake anvil but more likely a hinge half for a gate.
Cammie1314
Hi Folks, thanks for the info. I'm in Inverurie, Aberdeenshire. It's about 18" long and weighs over 60lbs. It's got hammer marks on the top. It came out of a barn on my wife's uncle croft along with a large anvil and a small anvil. He was a bit of a hoarder. Glenn
Put it on a stump and see if it works as an anvil. 60 pounds is a nice weight, and the 4 different sizes for horns should be useful.
Irondragon Forge ClayWorks
That size & weight and yep it's a stump anvil all right. Probably used for sharpening sickles & scythes.
Cammie1314
Thanks for all the replies guys. I'm going to keep it and mount it on an old beech stump I have lying around and then spend lots of time walking into it in my wee workshop haha. Thanks again
ausfire
Nice find! Can you show us the anvils as well?
Daswulf
Anyone else think that looks like part of a post vise made into a stump anvil? The "horn" looks bolted into what looks like the screw/screwbox hole.
ThomasPowers
But those bevels on the shaft would be "off" for a postvise. I guess they could be a retrofit too. OTOH the hole looks too round as well as all the postvises I have seen have a rather oval hole to keep the screwbox from rotating in it. I'd like to see a picture of the "back" showing the bolt head and any other details.
