Mtbarn
Hello all, The attached pictures show a chip in the corner of my hardy hole. I’m wondering if the sharp corner on the chip is something to be worried about?
Frosty
I don't think I'd worry about it, I'd avoid doing heavy work in it though. I try not to do very heavy work in a bottom (hardy) tool but I have a swage block for that. Frosty The Lucky.
ThomasPowers
Is it a steel faced WI anvil, a solid steel anvil, a cast iron anvil? It is a stress concentrator and depending on what type of anvil it is you might consider having the Gunther/Schuler anvil repair process done on it. Chris Williams
At a minimum, consider taking a small round file and rounding the sharp corner.
Mtbarn
The anvil is steel faced with a wrought body, a Hay-Budden.
Irondragon Forge ClayWorks
Also make sure the hardy's fit correctly without any taper that would put undue stress on the sides of the hardy hole.
John in Oly, WA
It almost looks like a torch cut that's been filled in. But that could just be my imagination.
bluerooster
I believe that the sharp "chip" would be a stress rizer in a thin portion of the anvil. I would probably dress it with a round file, and leave it be.
