Ecmartin
Can someone tell me the date of my Trenton anvil? It's serial number is A11076. It has the diamond with Trenton in it but also has a Buel Patent mark with what looks like "Wroght Iron Guaranteed USA" written around the words Buel Patent. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. ChrisPTF
Trenton A11076 would be the year 1899

Frosty
Welcome aboard E, glad to have you. If you'll put your general location in the header you might be surprised to discover hoe many of the Iforge gang live within visiting distance. We LOVE pictures and rarely believe you have a thing if you don't post a pic or two. Frosty The Lucky.

Black Frog
Thanks! Do you have a close up picture of the Trenton stamp and the serial number as well?
Ecmartin
Here is the Trenton stamp. I will get a photo of the serial stamp tomorrow.
John McPherson
Looks to me like it might say "SOLID WRO'T-STEEL WARRENTED USA" around the Buel Patent.
Danoinbuffalo
Ecmartin, hello and welcome to IFI. Semper Fi Bro always nice to see another Marine join the forum, there are several of us here. That is a beautiful anvil and should serve you well (and your son for all of his life and your grandson for all of his life...)
Black Frog
Would like to see the serial number picture! I had already recorded a likely SN 11076, and it is not this anvil. Is there a possible "A" in front?
Ecmartin
Yes there is an A in front of the serial number. What does that mean?
Black Frog
I was wondering if possibly part of the the A was being mistaken for the first "1" of the serial number. That mistake happens often on faintly stamped numbers. Looking forward to a picture!
Ecmartin
Here's the serial number it's definitely an A.

Ecmartin
Thank you for looking into this for me. Does the A change the dating of the anvil? The date isn't really that important to me but I do find it interesting that something that old is still in service.
ThomasPowers
Anvils are not really considered old until they are 200+ years. *Many* anvils that age and older are still in use. I have one from 1828 I use from time to time. (And yes the A indicates it's from after they restarted the numbering scheme.)
Black Frog
I've recorded several others in the serial range with similar stamps and placement. The "A" was just a prefix, probably for recordkeeping purposes with other things that have serial numbers.
Thejef
I was trying to find the age of my Trenton anvil but am not very computer savvy and have had no luck so far. I’m wondering if someone could tell me where to look up the serial number A42076. There is also what looks to be a sideways D and a 102 on the left side of the base. Might this possibly be 102 lbs? It feels to be about that by lifting it. I’ll have to see if I can get my wife to help me post a picture. Thank you for any help!
TWISTEDWILLOW
Anvils in America list serial numbers 42001-50000 as made in 1904 page 361.
ThomasPowers
Also anvils in that range weigh very easily on a typical bathroom scale. Hint: Do NOT tell wife "Gee this anvil weighs less than you do!" If the urge is uncontrollable; give her my phone number to deal with the "estate items"... One of the good reasons for wanting a LARGE anvil is to avoid such "mishaps"!
