Question about Hay Budden anvil age

Recommended Posts

From what I can see, the only restoration needed is to start hitting hot metal on it. Please don't grind, weld, or machine anything of that beauty. Wire wheel and a coat of oil maybe, but anything more aggressive than that could do more harm than good.

Thanks very much for the effort in putting a date to it. I will absolutely post better pictures of the anvil, as I will be restoring it. I'll take some clear before and after photos and post them in a new thread here. I am so excited!!

The only "restoring" that needs to be done is to restore it to it's rightful place in your shop. I second JME.

NO! Please don't "restore" that beautiful old lady it will only shorten her useful life or maybe ruin her!

At most she might like a little wire brushing, a coat of wax or oil and some good work done. Hot steel and hammer time is all the face needs to bring a healthy shine to her face.

As she sits there are a couple few GENERATIONS of good hard work in her, at least. Please don't hurt her, put her to work instead. If you want pretty buy an ASO and put it on display. That grand old lady wants to work, she's no wall hanger.

Many people want to put sharp edges on their anvil; but I have a blacksmithing book from 1889,1890,1891 that basically states "Is anyone so stupid as to still think that  an anvil should have sharp edges"?  They are supposed to be rounded to suit the person using them; trying to make them sharp again would be like buying a used car and demanding that the shipping covers it originally had be replaced on it before using it.

Lol. You guys are awesome. Of course I won't grind it!!! It's got years of use marks all over it, and I want to keep it that way.  The most I would ever do to this is wire-wheel all the paint off, and slather it with paste wax. I was thinking about using electrolysis to get the paint and rust off in one go, but that'll rip all the patina out too. Nope. Gonna knock off all of this paint with the wheel, and shine the face up with some nice hot steel. Thanks for the concern everyone. I'll post some pictures when I am done.

LMAO!!!!! YOU know how much I paid for this anvil! I can't wait to put it to use. For the record, I have given my new HB a name, and that name is Orion.
