August 7, 20169 yr I recently acquired this anvil and need some help to try and identify the maker and weight if possible. It was acquired from a local steel mill that had in house forge shop that was being shut down and sold for scrap. The mill had been in operation for over 150 years, but not sure how old the anvil is. On the picture with the "405" stamp there appears to be another number faintly stamped in front of it. possibly a 3?? might just be nothing.
August 9, 20169 yr is the weight close to 405? If so unlikely to be a UK anvil as they tend to be marked in stone weight.
August 9, 20169 yr Henry Wright marked both in pounds and stone weight at times, those dimensions are large for a 405 pound anvil! 6.25" x 38" x 17" is a big (and tall) anvil
August 9, 20169 yr Thanks for posting one of the exceptions. Flats on the feet, anchor stamping pound weight (possibly) bit of a mishmash of data points.
August 10, 20169 yr Author This is why I am having a hard time figuring out the exact maker. This anvil doesn't seem to fit any certain maker.... I haven't been able to find information on the anchor stamping/mark
August 15, 20169 yr Author I am not sure if the weight, unfortunately I don't have a scale that large. I will try and get it to one this week
August 15, 20169 yr Can you tell if it's forged or cast all steel? I'd figure with no raised relief writing is probably forged but looks like a real nice one whatever it is. Good score
August 18, 20169 yr My guess is a Peter Wright. My 150 has the same anchors stamped on the front foot.
August 18, 20169 yr I have this PW that weighs in at 449 pounds. Its measurements are 37 1/2" long, 15 3/4" tall and has a 6" wide face. Hardie is 1 3/4" and prichel is 11/16".
December 13, 20169 yr Author finally got a weight! The anvil is a massive 580 pounds. checked the weight on two separate scales. Thanks to everyone for helping identify this!!
December 14, 20169 yr Author I haven't been able to definitely figure it out. But it has the same anchor stamping as a peter wright that was shown by other members in this post... so i am saying it is a peter wright.
December 14, 20169 yr Good Morning, I know you are concerned regarding finding your Baby's Birth Mother. She is probably old enough to not want to listen to her Mother anymore anyway. I think she is perfectly fine, just the way she is. I think she is asking you to start some work on her back. I'm sure she will appreciate that anyway. I thought the Henry Wright had the Pritchell Hole and Hardy Hole, in line on center. The flat on the feet is a Peter Wright Trait. Where are the Volume knobs? If she starts to cry, tone her down a bit. LOL Enjoy the Journey, regardless of who her mother was!! Neil
December 14, 20169 yr I think it is a perfectly genuine concern, considering that a PW that size is probably worth $3000 and up, and a ? brand substantially less, regardless of their usefulness as a tool.
December 14, 20169 yr This PW just over 37 inches is 464ibs as marked .my anvil is 39 inches long but only 15 1/2 inches high hardy hole 1 1\2 sq also a PW but no visible markings. Maybe its a Soderfors look like cast steel
December 14, 20169 yr i don't think its a soderfors. the handling hole in the foot is not a soderfors thing. on the other hand it does have the right body shape to be one. soderfors are marked in lbs, to. the lbs is the only thing that would make me think that it is not a PW.
