January 4, 201313 yr Hi All ! Hubby's video made it to last night's Jay Leno show! Video is currently on top left of site, entitled "USA vs. The World"! :) http://www.nbc.com/the-tonight-show/
January 4, 201313 yr Author I'm glad blacksmithing is starting to get more publicity. It was such a dying art, and a precious one. It makes all the beginning hard years so worth it now! :) Here is the direct link to it : http://www.nbc.com/the-tonight-show/video/usa-vs-the-world-part-1/n31139
January 4, 201313 yr Well that's an unusual way to light a coffin nail! Way to go, blacksmiths rule!!!
January 4, 201313 yr Author I'm surprised the toxicity of the cigarette is even a thought by any of you guys. You all face the grim reaper in the face every time you light that forge, never mind clean the ashes ... Lol.
January 4, 201313 yr yeah. nothing like blowing black noogies out of your nostrils after a long day at the forge. woo hoo
January 5, 201313 yr Awesome! If I didn't get the crazy idea of quitting smoking 6 months ago I would try it.
January 5, 201313 yr Interesting, comparing the risk of smoking with working at the forge. I would suspect that the risk is a lot less, because smiths try to stay out of the plume and do not actively try to inhale. My worst day at a smoky wood-laced fire is nothing like a few days in Beijing. The smog there will cause you to cough up disgusting things in the shower for weeks. Although, I try not to inhale when I go there, it is difficult to avoid. I have been told that it is like a 2 pack a day habit.
January 5, 201313 yr You folks are missing the point. It was free publicity for the blacksmithing craft. I wonder how many folks are going to try to pound on a piece of metal just to see if they can do the same thing. Wonder how many will burn their fingers testing to see how hot it did get? At least he got them thinking about pounding on metal.
January 5, 201313 yr funny thing about that video, I had quit smoking for almost two years before this guy shot the video, " don't try this at home " Smoking is bad for you, especially........ if you have quit.
January 5, 201313 yr I remember as a kid bending a coat hanger back and forth to break it, boy did I ever get a burn on my fingers from doing that! Glenn, Yeah, we kinda missed that it was good publicity for the craft of smithing and maybe piqued an interest in the physics behind the demonstration.
January 7, 201313 yr Very nicely done! When I saw the set up, i thought he was going to heat a rod in the fire (and questioned if that would be cheating) but the way he did it was very impressive!
