Borntoolate
Hey, let's start a thread of good videos to share. Give a short description of the video and the link. All, I poke around on youtube for blacksmithing videos. I found this one a bit mesmerizing. There is no voice and the music gets annoying about 1/2 through but this is like a 12 minute crash course on making an ornate gate. Check it out... Assuming I know how to post a video link. It's German from the 30s and the guy has a hitler mustache but don't let that bother you. There is a lot of mortice and tenon joinery, interesting cuts and bends, a use of the vice that is so obvious but somehow I never thought of it. His delicate use of the hammer is also interesting. Lots of little tap tap blows while tweaking to finish. It's obvious this is not his first time at the anvil.http://www.youtube.c...e&v=PwgIjPEZzSE
CurlyGeorge
That was a pretty cool video. I'm glad that there are still some old video that shows how the old smiths did various procedures. Thank you for posting. :)

Thom Noblitt y Gonzalez
I just found and so far really like these two. Video one is preparing materials, welding and some light shapeing, while vireo 2 is grinding, sanding, etching and finishing. I will admit I watched them mutted so I don't know about the audio, music or commentary but watching the process was enjoyable to me. http://youtu.be/gLlObpob6lg http://youtu.be/2f01tU9akqY

kevan
This one is posted more for the music than the smithing, but both aspects are worthy..http://youtu.be/Kb54qPC3WPA

Ferrous Beuler
If you can't find a "proper" anvil I suppose a dud American 155mm artillery shell will do in a pinch. (that is not specified here but I believe I saw this same shop in another tourist's video a few years ago which detailed that bit of curiosity in the description, dud round set point down in a tree stump).http://youtu.be/LuDfTrLzhI8
Sam Salvati
Ferrous, my post anvil is made from the 5" square tool steel blanks they forged into 155mm Howitzer rounds, so that makes perfect sense, it's a great anvil!
Ferrous Beuler
I sure hope it's a demilled empty dud! Reminds me of an old wartime Bugs Bunny cartoon where Bugs got a factory job as a dud inspector. The shells went by on a conveyor belt and he smacked each one on the nose with a hammer. If it didn't go off he took a piece of chalk and scratched "DUD" on the side and then whacked the next one. Nice to hear from you Sam. Was trying to remember your old screen name. Escapes me. Did like your old avatar though. For some reason it always reminded me of a picture from the inside liner of the Pink Floyd The Wall album. BTW~ The original video showed the shell mounted into a much more substantial stump. There ain't much left of it these days it seems and it appears to wiggle a bit on the heavy hits. corex
This norwegian artist is using some interesting heavy gear to make nice sculptures. Turn the volume on for some nice steelbanging sound,
Tim McCoy
Corex - great find there! I don't know the words to use to describe how I feel about what Sipola does - perhaps magical is best. There is so much to learn from what is shown here. Thanks!

Ted T
Jesse Thanks for the video. It is always a treat to see a pillar in the blacksmithing craft at work. After watching that video of Hofi, I clicked onto your other videos. Well; there went my morning of good intentions of getting some work done around here. Of your many skills that you have developed in your lifetime, I noticed one that stands out to me. And that is your natural ability to communicate about how to build. You demonstrated how to make and transfer a pattern of a motorcycle gas tank, from a gas tank. And then you demonstrated and narrated how to transfer the pattern to a piece of sheet metal along with useful information about several things to consider while doing it. My point here is that your obvious skills make what you say trustworthy. And then when you link that earned credential along with your natural ability to clearly explain the process in a very simple understandable way, makes me want to encourage you to do more. Thank You for posting. My very best to you! Ted Throckmorton
