  1. When it comes time to fit my K26 soft bricks to the forge body, I'm going to need to cut some of them. Will it be safe to do that on my table saw (that has a super dust collection attached) or should I carefully hand saw while not creating any unnecessary dust?
  2. I like, I like, I like. Hammer heads are something I really want to be able to make.
  3. "resistant to wind"? My ancestors lived on the open plains of America (mighty windy) and they lived very comfortably in tee-pees. You might get on a mountain man type forum and see if they have any info about tee-pees that would help in your decision.
  4. How easily removed is a wigwam? A tee-pee can be taken down in a matter of minutes. A tee-pee also has a natural updraft that would take any smoke immediately away from your work area. In fact, you wouldn't even need a chimney, I wouldn't think. Would a wigwam do that?
  5. I'm still invested in the TPAAAT system...................just not a very patient "waiter".
  6. Yes but..............................in the end they ended up on a London Pattern anvil.
  7. Personally, I'd pass on it. Looks as if it's been "rode hard and put up wet"! Hardly any table left on it. Can't believe someone would abuse an anvil like that.
  8. Well, I'd have to say that's a mighty nice setup. Looks as if you've everything you need right there, nice and handy. I'd give it a thumbs up emoji if we had one.
  9. Oh, I'll reward him, for sure. Don't know his name or how to get hold of him. But if he contacts me with a lead, I'll let him know he'll be compensated if he finds one I end up buying. Not quite sure why I didn't think of that when I was talking with him. Should have at least gotten the name of the company he drives for. DUH!
  10. Saw a rural propane delivery truck stopped at a country convenience store today. Jumped out of my truck and talked to the driver about anvils. Said he sees tons (no pun intended) of them...........just didn't know if any were for sale. He delivers to Jerry McClure, and OK Master knife maker. Said Jerry has several.............but I don't figure he's at all interested in letting any of them go at what I consider a reasonable price. I gave him my card and asked if he would mind asking anyone he sees who has one if they might be interested in selliing. Gotta keep askin' the question.
  11. Well, I really meant..........are you back at home with your wife on a permanent basis. Small pickups and moving don't make a good combination.
  12. Thanks, Thomas. Are you settled back in NM now?
  13. I've mentioned previously that I've been making wood carving knives for the local carving community. But my reason for building the forge and searching for a "proper" anvil is because I want to venture into the larger of the relatives.............."full-sized" knives. I know there are lots of books on the subject of knife making, but today I ordered "The Wonder of Knifemaking" by Wayne Goddard. Several people have recommended it as a pretty good and understandable book for the newly inspired knife maker. I'm sure some of you either have it or have read it. Anyone care to comment on it's contents sort of as a mini-review?
  14. JHCC, tell your son he's on the track to taking over the old man's anvil! Dangit, you guys keep igniting my envy shortcoming! I hope to make hammer and tool heads some day, but it'll have to be with borrowed equipment because a Pressciouss isn't in my future. Nice lookin' hammer head. Be sure and post a pic when you get it all cleaned up, handled and ready to use.
  15. If you don't want to mess with the challenge, galvanized shackles and chain are available at most any DIY store. I would think, from my experience with anchoring a sailboat, that about 2 to 3 foot of chain ought to make that nice anchor work just right.
  16. I've watched both of his videos on that anchor. Pretty cool to watch a pro like that at work. Your's looks great........even ifin' ya did cheat just a little. It's plenty heavy. Just add about two feet of steel chain to it to make sure when it hits the bottom it pulls horizontally. Just make a shackle and hook up some chain. Dat's how dey wirk!
  17. Decided if I "quit looking" I'd never stumble onto one. So......................Spent the majority of today driving and talking with any farmer of country livin' person I spotted out on a tractor, mower or just plain workin' out front. I live in the country and it's not considered proper to open a closed gate and just drive onto someone's property. I was talkin' anvils. Passed out 12 cards to people who said they would keep their eyes open. Recruited one feller who is trying to put together his own propane forge to come and join in on our Thursday night open forge. Only found one man who said he had two anvils in his shop, but he was away from the house. Said he'd look at them when he got back to his property and let me know if he was really interested in selling one. ( but I think he was at least entertaining the idea ) Didn't know anything about them, i.e. weight, brand, style, etc. So I'll just wait for a phone call.
  18. When I was still in diapers, my Father owned a paint and body shop. He closed it and moved "up" in the world, but his hammers and tools all remained in my life until about 2000 when my my shop was broken into and they were stolen. For some unknown reason, I managed to end up with his Lead Float. (would rather have ended up with his hammers) I remember him using it when he did some lead work on Mom's 1952 Studebaker. He took off all the chrome, leaded all the holes and repainted it. Interesting process. It's a beast of a file to say the least. Still have it in my file cart and find a use for it off and on when working on wood. It has a tang on it like most files. Never saw a wooden "D" handle as you mentioned, Billy Bones, but I imagine it would have been easier to use in that configuration.
  19. Teh-he, Snuffy. I feel your pain. Have a friend who is looking for one for me. He keeps bringing me pictures of cobbled up chunks of steel and saying "I found one for ya". I sat him down a couple of days ago and tried to edumicate him on the difference between anvils and "anvil shaped objects". Oh well, maybe God will drop a real one in my lap like he did Dan. I can only hope.
