jlpservicesinc: really cool, good work with everything, im a bit envious of your portable forge there. But everything looks really well forged on the table there, im unsure what one thing is though, what is the thing with legs and a pan like thing to the far right next to the hinges? ausfire: those look really clean good stuff, never made a leaf in my life so dont know how it is done, i think it is cool I would wear one on my keychain for sure hope you get to sell a lot. So this might not be blacksmithing 100% but related to it, Finished my vax carving tools and made a box for it, also made new file handles for some files I had no handles for, made from spalted birch (stabilized) and beech wood, I for one love spalted birch I don't have many types of wood here in the northern part of Sweden but I hear spalted maple looks good but never seen it in person. Reason this post is partially blacksmithing is cause the small tools are forged (painfully since they are so small) and the files are I guess metal related ha ha. -
Forestry harvester chansaw bars
Zrognak replied to Zrognak's topic in Heat Treating Knives, Blades etc
Just a side note for those who are curious, I have tested a small piece and it is not hard to forge feels like a spring steel or maybe a tool steel seems to harden as tool steel does cause I could make a engraving tool out of it that held an edge pretty good, the grain structure without any forging just hardening is a super smooth grey, so smooth in fact its similar to a drill bit if broken (not carbide but normal ones) but I will have to do more testing in a year when I get home. Thank you for the info good sir. -

We probably wont be doing much heating of the silver unless we are casting or annealing it, but that is good info thank you. Thank you good sir. -

I forgot Im moving away to a apartment to attend silversmithing school in a few days so I wont have access to my shop, but Ill dig into this next summer when I get home. Thank you all for your info it has been most helpful. -
I been looking around on the forums and on google but cant find anything, only found about hand held chainsaw bars and what they are composed of, so if there is another thread on the forums or a list of possible types of steel that are used for the chainsaw bars from forest harvesters I would love to know, it is cause I got a huge amount of them to use for practice and thought it would be nice to know how to heat treat the steel if I do feel like forging something out of a piece. Sorry if there is already a thread about this but cant find anything.

Indeed you live and you learn, just testing cause I wanted to see how thin i could make it just made it a bit too thin for my heat treating abilities, It was meant to be a versatile seax chef knife never forged a thin blade like this before. But its all good only 1 hour lost, and it was fun -

I always been a fan of raindrop pattern, but most of the time people make it to generic, but this is amazing work cause the pattern has much more of a natural flow its beautiful, also it being your second attempt at it is really impressive: By the looks of it is a really well crafted knife, looks like a knife that should work well for a lot of things, also since you made a convex shaped edge and it not being as curved as a kukri it should work for skinning as well. And back to the pattern, like I sad your second attempt it is impressive, I like the amount of layers you used it looks great, I personally not a fan when it gets to a point where there are so many layers it is hard to tell, think that the balance of finding the right layers for the pattern is key, and I think you did great man. Thank you for sharing your crafts, I would love to see more images if its not a bother

Thank you, it actually works great even though it is my first attempt, I made it for filing jewelers wax and it works great it does not clog up like a normal needle file would do with wax -
My first anvil... Did I pick up a useable one?
Zrognak replied to AustinGH's topic in Anvils, Swage Blocks, and Mandrels
Wow, that was a good deal man, I paid around 200usd for a 200pound bofors anvil which was a good deal as well. Happy for you, this anvil should serve you well for years to come -

I needed some really tiny rasps made, but I have no idea on how to do so, but I gave it a go anyway, it does not look good, the teeth are all over the place but I will give it some more tries, think I also need to adjust the cutting tool, it will get better hopefully. it is heat treated and it cuts. -
That is great for a first knife, you are doing good specially impressed with the other forgings you made, really well made. You got a talent for forging, thank you for sharing your creations.

Re forging blade after grinding? Should I?
Zrognak replied to Luis Vernabe's topic in Heat Treating Knives, Blades etc
Only things I can add is depending on how thin you have shaped the knifes edge be careful so you don't over heat it cause the thinner parts will heat up much quicker then the spine of the knife, also since you are going to heat treat it again if the edge is really thin it can crack much more easy depending on how far you got with the grinding. -
Good looking knife, your leather work looks solid man good work it fits the knifes design really well, you got nothing to worry about your leather work it looks good, if you feel that you want to improve it then it will, cause the more the work you do the better you will become.
