I was taught to "warm up" by making a leaf or S-hook. That does 2 things it warms up your muscles and the anvil's sweet spot. It does help when setting a forge weld. I can’t control the wind. All I can do is adjust my sails. ~Semper Paratus~ USCG 1964-1970

One of our founding members of the BOA, so many years ago still makes leaves when he fires up his forge. He uses them to warm up and get his fire just right for the more complicated items. BTW he is a Master Blacksmith, Master Knife Smith and Master Sword Smith. He makes Japanese Samurai swords and Tanto knives to die for. Along with mundane blacksmith items. I can’t control the wind. Welcome from the Ozark mountains I have been blacksmithing for 40 + years and the heaviest anvil I have in all those years is a 110 pound Vulcan, my favorite. It has done everything I have needed it to do, so I doubt the extra 22 pounds would be worth it. We have 5 anvils in the shop and my wife loves her 106 pound Hay Budden. I can’t control the wind. The 33708 is the serial number, will tell when it was made and the R foot should be the weight when forged. Is yours that heavy? I think it will be a Trenton with that info. Someone with a copy of Anvils in America may confirm that. It would also help to know where in the world you are located, if you add location to your profile we won't have to ask when location is important. I can’t control the wind. Here is our traveling vise. The stand is made out of an old truck flywheel. When on dirt I drive spikes in the ground through the holes in the flywheel. If on solid surfaces I made a plate from plywood that I can screw the flywheel to it and stand on the plate to keep it from moving around. I can’t control the wind. I would try stock removal prior to forging them. Just have to keep the stock cool as not to lose the temper. Forging may be a challenge as I found out with some mystery steel, it turned to the texture of cottage cheese above a certain heat. I can’t control the wind. No problem as safety is our paramount concern. That picture was taken just after I removed it from the stand the Hobart welder is on. It was an empty Argon/CO2 tank and on the way to the welding supply shop for a refilled-exchange tank. I was in the process of removing the regulator. Here is where the tanks live when in use. We mounted ours on one of those Harbor Freight wheeled carts with a shelf below to hold all the extra belt wheels and other stuff that seems to get accumulated. You can see it next to the welder. Here it is with the knife grinding jig Debi built. We have to change the belt pulley groves for different belt speed's. I can’t control the wind.
