  1. That is a lot nicer than any cleaver that I've seen in a Chinese restaurant.
  2. That axle reminds me of a Black Thorn staff, the wood that the Irish make their shillelaghs out of.
  3. Thanks Daswulf, now I know what a clinker looks like. I don't see a problem with your pictures, they are very clear. And I am not going attribute the clear pictures to my recent cataract surgery.
  4. Thank God for giving me a thick skin, it helps to avoid ulcers. My standard reply to someone who insists that their opinion is " much more righter than mine" I reach into my pocket and pull out a 25 cent piece and hand it to them and tell them to use it to call someone who cares about what they have to say on the subject. Although my language is much harsher towards them.
  5. I am just starting out and will be 72 in April. My son and grandson have no interest in this. I also have a step son in law and a step grandson and a step grandaughter. This part of the family is not allowed near tools, they are dangerous with tools. My son will be tasked with finding someone deserving. And from what I learned on the web there is a studio not too far from me. They could point my son in the right direction.
  6. All this time I thought that it was obligitory to cut the power cord with the grinding wheel.
  7. Stan your Pexto wrench was, I believe was made in Meriden Connecticut by the Peck and Stowe company. The have been out of business many years.
  8. For those who want to do it the old fashion way, I tip my hat to them. Nice to realize that if society fails as some predict you could still do what you needed to do. My own self I appreciate "modern", especially medicine, and modern medical practices. That's the only reason I am still here able to type this. In my physical shape if had I to do it all by hand it wouldn't get done.
  9. When everything goes right I get very nervous. It is usually followed by several days of things going wrong.
  10. I envy you guys who have an artistic imagination.
  11. Culver I realized that I needed tongs, being inexperienced I bought some farrier's nippers, used of course. I got 3 of them for under $20 on that famous bidding site. I figure all I have to do is straighten out the curved jaws and forge the jaws to the shape that I need. I will be able to practice making my own tongs without any pressure. I guess it will take me at least 10 tries before I get something resembling working tongs, in the mean time I'll have some usable ones.
  12. I have read that a throw out bearing from a car's clutch assembly would also work. As new as I am I have no personal experience with this.
  13. I don't know about burners, but as a father and a grandfather you and your little girl have my prayers.
  14. Just had cataract surgery on both eyes. After 65 years of wearing glasses I don't need them any more. To say the least I was tickled pink. I had to grind some steel, as I started to grind I realized that I no longer had eye protection. I began to think back over the years how my prescription glasses had saved my eyes. Even with the glasses I had two incidents of getting metal in my eye. I now have two pair of soft plastic goggles and a face shield. I got the face shield at HF for $3. Be safe.
  15. I'd probably wind up with a hernia trying to move it.
  16. Charles I would hope that the police would have more than a rudimentary knowledge of the law. They have the ability to take your freedom away.
  17. We always used a double boiler to melt beeswax. When you make a liquid out of it you can measure it the same way you measure the linseed oil, and the turps. No guessing involved.
  18. If your ground is frozen just build a bonfire on it. I live on top of the Pocono Mountains, and they tell me that the frost line is 40 inches deep. I've never had a problem digging in the dead of winter, after burning a bonfire for an hour or a little more.
  19. North Jersey is full of old iron mines. I lived in Stanhope for a while and there was an old mine across the street from my house, it was listed in my deed. A lot of the mines were just holes in the ground. On occasion while out hunting I would come across an old hole and find pieces of "iron" near them sticking out of the ground. There were the old abandon farms, which were just some cellar holes with some rock walls . Just be careful of the snakes, Timber Rattlers and Copperheads.
  20. Everything Mac google Green Bay Manufacturing, They sell inserts that are round with a square hole in the middle. You drill a hole of the appropriate diameter, place the insert in it and weld it into the hole, from underneath. I have no personal experience with them, but it sounds like it makes life easy.
  21. We always thought that ground hogs provided additional protein . A fair exchange for the vegetation they ate. Being that I am half Irish and half Italian, and the cooking growing up was done by the Italian half, it was usually Cacciatore. In english hunters stew.
  22. I got 4 ft. x 4 ft by 8 ft. box built in my cellar, with a window cut into the foundation right above the box. It will hold about 4 tons of coal. Now I don't have to carry coal down to the stove, only up to the forge, if the honey-do list ever gets done.
  23. Das have you ever considered giving up auto body work and becoming a full time artist.? My mother in law paints, and some of the work by other artists sell for a lot of money, why xxxxxx if I know from looking at them. From what I've seen of your work you should have no trouble selling it. Where do you get the chain?
