  1. Thanks men for all the response. You're going to help make me a half xxx blacksmith yet. Thanks for all the help Billy
  2. I like that. I hope in the next _ _ _ years I can do stuff like that. Finish is nice. What did you use? Thanks for showing us Billy
  3. Lube .......... UMMMM ........... Sweat mostly !! Well I've read and heard about that too but haven't really used any. I have a can of coal dust that I try to use once in a while but it don't stick very good. What do I need to try? Finnr, Slow and Jerky ...... You hit the Punch right on the head! Finnr, Frosty. Thank You
  4. S.Willis, Thanks for the reply, nice looking tomahawks. Frosty, Thanks as usual. I'll try your process. I guess one of my problems is not getting it out of the hot metal quick enough. My motions are not very fluid yet ( sometimes I wonder if they will get fluid ) but I' m trying. I guess thats what counts. Thank You Billy
  5. There are many threads on this subject. I've searched and read quite a few of them. I know tool steel is best but right now all I have is truck coil spring. My punches mushroom or mushroom and bend on the working end. I anneal, quench in water, polish and heat treat with a propane torch to bronze. Seems like I might be getting a little better, last one only mushroomed slightly but only punched 2 holes ( 3/4" , my 1/2" punch does the same ). Any suggestions Billy
  6. I watched a pair of tongs being made Saturday. The jaws were welded to the handle. Flux was added while in the fire not wire brushed before added. Taken out at orange heat. A couple pretty good licks then worked until color was gone. It Stuck! I guess an expert smith.
  7. Hit the wrong key! Where can you get Pine Tar? Super glue, had heard about that also, but as usual forgot about it too. Never thought about Fingernail glue. Thanks Billy
  8. Man, The things that can be learned here !! My Grandfather used to us Pine Tar, had forgotten all about it.
  9. Sure am glad this thread was started. Thank you Keltio. I have a 10' x 10' (approx.) log building that I have my forge in. It's over 100 years old and was built by my great grandfather as a blacksmith shop. As of yet no hood. Been thinking about building one but wasn't sure how I wanted it. Now with no hood smoke isn't to bad after the fire is going good. There is alot of cracks so a natural draft of sorts takes most of the smoke out. I get a bunch of ash that doesn't make it out. My question is does a hood or side draft get rid of some of the ash? After all that you guys on here have said I'm been figuring on a side draft of some sort. Am hoping I can Jimmie Rig one some how. Jayco, I like yours. Thanks again Billy
  10. Thank you Tom Sorry about the death in your family. I really like the touchmark that I got from you. Thank You Billy
  11. Frosty, That is one of coolest cup holders I have ever seen. Every shovel, rake and hoe really should come with one attached. Billy
  12. I got my stamp from the Stamp man. Now that I've got it I'm not sure of the right way to use it. Do you stamp with the metal hot or cold or in the middle. I just don't want to screw it up when I first use it. I have a tendency to do that on occasion. I've used stamps on metal before but I've never had a "special" stamp before. Billy
  13. arftist, You wouldn't happen to have a picture of it would you. Hope you do. Billy
  14. Stamp Man, Got my touch mark today. It's nice. Thank You. Something that I've been thinking about though, do you stamp with the metal hot, warm or cold. I don't want to ruin my stamp first thing. Thanks for the stamp Billy
  15. Such a good idea! I tried it yesterday, but, I think part of my problem was that the refrige was a little to stocked. Oh Well had fun and learned alot. I'm going to give it a try again today! Thanks for the Idea
  16. I've learned a bunch here so far. Now something else I hope. I've heard them mentioned a couple of times, what all is a tumbler used for. And yes " a nice clean shop ". I like the size, mines so small and over 100 years old. It was my Great Grandfathers so I like it no matter the size.
  17. Mr. Hofi, I'll be glad when I'm able to get one hole good in decent amount of time. I think all of you in this thread will help. I think I have a slitter made that might work. I'll try it tomorrow.
  18. Brian I'd like to see your DVD's. Where can we get them. Like i've said before this is a good thread. Just what I've been wanting to learn more about. Looking forward to the BP. Thanks to everyone here
  19. This thread just keeps getting better. Gerald, The book you were talking about sounds very good. I did a search but couldn't find it. Where can a copy be purchased if you don't mind me asking. Thanks Billy
  20. Like what has been said before, this is a very good thread. Brian Will we be-able to see the BP or will it be one that we get to see when all the BP's come back online. I've been trying to make some tools but am having trouble but this thread is helping. Looking forward for the BP
  21. Thanks Frosty, I guess with more practice I'll get better. I hate to mess the dome up after it is up and working so good. Maybe the thing to do is for me not to wait so long before smacking the top of the dome. Like everyone here seems to always say practice , practice and more practice. Thanks Billy
  22. This is another good thread. I can usually get a good hot fire and lately have been able to get a good dome built up. Something that I'm having trouble with is keeping coke in the bottom. My dome stays built up but after awhile the bottom burns up. When I try to get something down there the dome collapses. What do I need to do?
