  1. I forgot to mentioned I have that build in I did heated it , worked it hot, but from irregularities I think I will buy thicker plate and one which does not have curves , I think there is risk denting anvil with this one even grinded and flattened . I will use that plate fro other projects too.
  2. Well I made it it's still kinda jumpy but when you work with hot chisel and some holdfast I hope it won't jump that much. This new fuller helped a lot to bend it in vise. I didn't had sharp corner on bend so I used fuller to bend it more . I sandes a little bit face of anvil and horn
  3. Can working cold on anvil dent anvil damage it a bit. i wanted to straighten one plate it had some curve, and i noticed like tiny dent from it. And i stopped will do it again in forge some other time. Reason i wanted to do this is becasue i want plate that will protect anvil from chiseling drifting etc while you could go trough hot steel and damage anvil. Ironicaly i think i damaged a bit, like hair thickness. Now i see its called hardy plate , but iam plaing to make it U shape so you can move it across anvil.
  4. Well this is not cautarization per se with iron but I heard you can do it with hot meat, b old people. Don't know is it healthy but nail wounds can be healed with that.
  5. How they hold lieky that, I have anxiety if I pick it it will fall to table. Be careful when reaching for angle grinders
  6. I doubt that it is masonry because there is some left traces from mushrooming of head . Like someone pounded on it like striker
  7. I bought those And Noo it's tempting but I won't weld rod to french wrench so I could twist materials Ian wondering this hatchet shaped hammer was it chip off or is it like some fuller If I weld leaf spring to it and make it like hot cut will I ruin it , o think that one part is broke it does not have cuting edge
  8. Yeah i don't plan either but I find it interesting from movies i tought it was madw up, so it could be true
  9. From wikipedia Cauterization (or cauterisation, or cautery) is a medical practice or technique of burning a part of a body to remove or close off a part of it. It destroys some tissue in an attempt to mitigate bleeding and damage, remove an undesired growth, or minimize other potential medical harm, such as infections when antibiotics are unavailable. The practice was once widespread for treatment of wounds. Its utility before the advent of antibiotics was said to be effective at more than one level: To prevent exsanguination To close amputations Cautery was historically believed to prevent infection, but current research shows that cautery actually increases the risk for infection by causing more tissue damage and providing a more hospitable environment for bacterial growth. Actual cautery refers to the metal device, generally heated to a dull red glow, that a physician applies to produce blisters, to stop bleeding of a blood vessel, and for other similar purposes." As we saw in some movies that main character after having wound heat metal to read hot and than put that on wound. Are there cases recorded in blacksmith books about this medicine procedure, on some weird way it reminded me that blacksmith long time ago could do this. Or could assist doctors to do this procedure. I saw this picture on youtube so i got inspired to open this topic
  10. Yeah it made sense but I welded everything fine since Ian better smith than stick welder, weld have up and I had left two flat stocks in hardy and round one out I mean L shape stayed in and round thick got pulled off by hammering .
  11. I welded one side of flat stock to round bar of holddown hardie tool. Because hole is square and this is 3/4 round mild steel . I will weld another one too ,hope it won't twist om me and I will have better grip. Other is cool spring venter punch
  12. WEll i think that depend of thicknes of coil spring, some coil spring maybe in my case wich is 1/2 inch in diameter deserve hammer treatment.
  13. What i can make from bounch of coil spring. I wasted lot's of fuel to unfold one of them, i wanted to make holdfast for hardy hole, that one wich is L shaped .
  14. I forged nail header but it's made from leaf spring can't be drilled I think I will have to anneal it . I watched on internet get it to cherry red then put it in ash to cool down. Then I will weld handle to it
  15. IS it posible for blacksmith to make handplane? I mean wooden one? I have drill press, is spring steel good for blade, i have leaf spring steel, maybe i will weld some mild steel to it. Only harder part is i guess making wooden block on drillpress , but wont be hard to drill out.
  16. Well I don't have space for bigger drill press I will see can I peck way for bigger holes
  17. So it can work for knife holes and something small, I will see to use it for that and use it for wood.
  18. I bought used drill press but Ian not familiar is it to weak for metal to drill with it. It sometimes get stuck when drilling holes in hardened steal, is this drill press for woodworking or it is a little bit weak. I saw videos that you can change conductor on it so you can make motor stronger. It does not have too much torque I can If I use force stop it Maybe there is some issue with motor if it's weak or maybe conductor ,maybe it's designed for that purpose I tried to drill steel with 9 mm drill bit less then half inch hole
  19. I think heavier the hammmer is you more need this technique "empty blows" and i see you grab hammers too hard, need to hold it a litle lighter. Don't too light that it can't get out of hand but don't gripp to much on it.
  20. WEll i cant consider smithing today but i gathering knowledge by old blacksmith. He is 85 years old, i didn't see him forging and i went to his home, asked how are you chit chat, he invited me to his house, and we talked like 2 hours, old me won't go to him if i don't saw him forging, but what a xxxx i gave it a try, and we talked a l lots' of topics, and i learned something more. I didn't know how much older folks are grateful if you spend some time with them like 2hours,and man i don't feel sorry about that time spend at his house. Learned new stuff about life about blacksmithing, how to heat treat (he explained it theoretically )how to heat treat by his way, and he explained me how to make charcoal, which steel is good for tools, for example you can make good knife out off saw blade, you don't need to hit and forge too much that thickness.
