  1. Was at an estate sale for lunch pick up a box of stuff for $13.00 best fine was a brass hammer head 2" round. I have been needing one for hot cuts.
  2. Here is a real good manual put out by Nicholson on file type and use. Files are great tools but take some practices to use. http://www.evenfallstudios.com/woodworks_library/nicholson_guide_to_filing_2006.pdf
  3. I"m happy, as long as it doesn't say Harbor Freight. Might try rubbing flour on it to see if more letters come out. Going to work on a Froe this weekend. Tried last weekend, was having a problem with making the eye. Should be easier with a horn and 130 more pounds under my hammer blows. Found a good demo on anvilfire for a froe.
  4. Just pick up a 162 lb anvil for $300.00 not sure on the brand. Has some letters on the side ( oss &) is all I can make out. Going to give it a good cleaning and see if I can fine more of the name. It's a little beat up but will be a lot better then my Rail road track.
  5. Thomas I was excited to fine it, I'm trying to decide were on my workbench to put it. On my things to make list was some Moxon Bench Hook (planning stops).
  6. The hammer is a wall hanger, might put a handle on it and hang it in the shop.
  7. Lunch I was going to pick up a lathe, had a call just before I got there that it was sold. Said I could look around because everything need to go. Here is the junk I got for $20.00 The hammer head is 13 lbs.( between vise and garage springs) not sure what it was used for. The large plate is aluminum 1/2 think. and the saw is a thumb hole D8 or D-8 have to clean it up.
  8. My 7 year old son had Friday off from school asked him what he wanted to do "Dad I want to forge" :D He made hook for his aunt for Easter. This one he wanted a double twist. He also gave her a nail he made the other day. I was able to finished a nail header for a friend and made another hammer handle. It was a good day.
  9. Plumb 2 lb hammer and and a 1859 Fray & Pigg brace. Hammers are my new addiction, it took me about 1 year to kick my hand saw addiction (well almost). Lucky they have all been hammers I needed.
  10. Seen this the other night for Smith and Forge Hard Cider. Is the hard cider any good?
  11. Pick up another hammer at an estate sale for $2.00 this one is kind of odd. The main hammer is maybe 1.5 lb then the other side is maybe .5 lb Here is a photo of the hammer next to my 2.5 lb Heller not sure why the hammer is set up this way, no brand name on the hammer.
  12. I use to hate hacksaws until I pick up a real good blade. Now I use one all the time. Try a good Nicholson blade with a low tooth count. I have used cheap blades and have flatten the teeth in the first pass. You could also use a angle grinder.
  13. I have a paint buck set up just for electrolysis, last year I did a Jointer that was rusted up bad. Took about a week to clean all the parts. The only side effect was the wife was not happy with a laundry sink in the back yard. Might try the post vise this year, looking for a kids pool.
  14. I'm just starting out so only have a few hammers, here is a simple rack I made out of bed frame.
  15. Hit an estate sale at lunch today and pick up a vintage Heller 2 1/2 lb hammer in great condition for $5.00 It feel great in my hand can't wait to try it out. Also pick up a pipe vise for $20.00
  16. I use a Milwaukee port-a-band saw for most of my metal cutting. I clamp it in the post vise, I also add a table and foot switch. It works great. This company makes some real nice stands for portable band saws http://www.swagoffroad.com/SWAG-V30-Portaband-Table_p_55.html
  17. I really like the handle on the ball fuller, it looks so clean and tight. Great Job.
  18. Had a mouse in the garage once, he used my band saw as a storage place for bird seeds, Turned on the saw and it started to rain bird seeds.
  19. Eggwelder You should turn the washing machine tub into a fire pit. :D A friend of mine made one it was really cool. http://houseandfig.com/2013/01/20/10-diy-one-hour-recycled-firepit/
  20. Thank you all for the information. Going to put a handle on it and give it a try. Jacob
  21. What kind of hammer is this? Is this a hammer? It has the letters GMBC on it. Was doing some spring cleaning and found this? It's just under 1 lb trying to decide if it's worth putting a handle on. Thanks, Jacob
  22. Great video, I like all the little details he puts in the project. Like carving the wood to match the lathe head.
  23. Brian, Thanks for the information. Using clay as and example is a great idea for teaching, you can really see what is happening when you cut it, and form shapes. Looked you up on youtube I'm going to have hours of video to watch. :) Thanks, Jacob
  24. I'm just starting out, I have been working on nails. The problem I'm having is I'm hitting to soft when cutting, I was also using a hardy cut with a tip that was round and not sharp. So by the time I cut and twist the nail to break it off it's lost it's yellow and turns black. So it was hard to form a nice looking nail head. Pick up a new hardy cut this weekend that is sharp going to attempted some more nail soon. I will have to pick up a brass hammer, have one for my hand planes but the handle is short. Thanks, Jacob
