  1. Hi Marc , I had the same problem with a supplier of coke here in Victoria , was supplying " cricket ball " sized coke , that i'd have to crush down to a usable size , then when burning i'd end up with firepot clogged up with fine clinkers / ash . Found mixing it with lump charcoal improved it a lot , thou still ended up with firepot full of clinker / ash at end of forging day . Have since switched to using straight charcoal , as coke is getting harder & harder to get here now . Hope this helps you some what with your problem . Dale Russell
  2. To think working head down butt up all day under a hunk of four legged dog food is a good idea .
  3. Ladies & Gentlemen , for the time being this thread is being " Locked " until Admins / Staff can look at it .. Dale Russell Moderator86
  4. The LAST time I wore gloves while smithing I had a piece of white hot coke flick up inside the cuff of my glove , it burnt , blistered , burst , bleed before I could get the glove off . NEVER wore gloves while smithing after that . That was 18 years ago , still have the scar to remind me of it today Dale Russell
  5. G'day Laughing Bodger , sorry I haven't welcomed you before now , but life has gotten in the way . Forklift tinnes , do you have a forklift hire company near you , they replace tinnes all the time , if you talked to the service manager explaining what you want 1 for you mite be able to get it for a $ donation to the mechanics xmas drinks ( was a former former field service forklift mechanic in another life ) . Click on the link & then add your name to the list ... Dale Russell
  6. Irondragon , How about an axel wheel bearing dust cover ? Something like this Dale Russell
  7. Hi all , a friend of mine who belongs to a local online horse riders group asked me to ask this question What are you paying for your track / dressage / weekend hack shoeing ? Seems there is big price range not only in different states of Australia , but in different parts of each state as well ( he did tell me the prices , but old timers has set in & I cant remember them ) Would also be interested in seeing the prices that are being charged around the rest of the world as well Dale Russell
  8. The box is just an old carpenters tool box that was given to me many yrs ago , the case has been in use as my smithing box for 15 odd yrs as you can see by the plywood peeling off around the edges ( job soon to fix / replace ) Was toying with idea on fitting a draw at the bottom to take all the tongs instead of being on the inside of the hinged section , but then i'd have to lift " lid " each time I wanted to change tongs , something to think about anyway . Did think about mounting the stand directly to the case , but this works well with 4 wing nuts to put it together in either stand or trolley form & 2 more for the wheeled section Dale Russell
  9. Tools Frosty , got tired of having to bend down to grab a hammer / pair of tongs . It also ( the stand ) breaks down into a trolley to move the box around Dale Russell
  10. Loki Smith , here's another 1 I forgot to put up . http://watersidemetalart.org/ Littleblacksmith .... thank you for posting the OZ Roll Call ( I should have posted that also seeing I started it , getting forgetful in my old age ) Dale Russell
  11. G'day Loki Smith , best advice I can give you is hook up with 1 of the local smithing groups here in Melbourne . They'll set you on the right path . Here's the links to them . ( just don't tell them I sent you or they'll charge you double membership fees ) ... http://www.abavic.org.au/ http://www.blacksmithing.com.au/ Dale Russell
  12. Jackdawg , I had the same problem awhile ago . I ended up standing at my flypress for 2 day's crushing 1 piece at a time to make them smaller ( not ideal but only way I could do it at the time . ) I know of 1 person who ran a bag of " cricket ball ' sized coke through a garden mulcher , coke came out the size he wanted , didn't do the inside of mulcher or blade much good thou . 13. Bob , have you checked out the below link ? https://www.iforgeiron.com/topic/30887-forges-and-fires/ Dale Russell
  14. Frosty Feed dogs Hook & base ( which holds the bobbin case ) Yeah you soon get to know if a machine is running right just by the sound of it . I did my first apprenticeship ( 2nd was an adult apprenticeship as Mechanical Engineer ) working on machines like this . 3 rows of needles 120 inches wide , each needle had to be timed to the shuttle underneath it .... Oh Joy , Oh Bliss ... Not ! Dale Russell
  15. Frosty , ... as materials to forge stuff from yes , but for some 1 like Daswulf or Ausfire to make " critters " ect from no . Sadly looking at the parts to make items out of is not " my " strong suit , I just see a bunch of parts combined that are used to sew clothing ect . Dale Russell
  16. Das , even if they where wearing a pair of these ?
  17. MB , in a past life I was a sewing machine mechanic . The steel in that will be mostly mild steel , cast parts I wouldn't even bother with , centre shaft will be a chrome steel ( read stay away from ) . The hook & base ( where the bobbin goes into ) is chrome steel as well . Frankly other then as sewing machine parts in my opinion not worth the bother Only thing i'd use out of the whole thing would be the motor & foot peddle & rig them up to a centrifugal fan of some sort as a blower for a forge Dale Russell
  18. Clemson tiger , you need to add where you are to your profile so we know where in the world you are . I could give you lists of suppliers in Australia , but they would be of no use to you if your in America or Europe . Found this in the knife section in 1 1/2 minutes Dale Russell
