  1. As a horse owner, I let my Farrier do the purchasing of shoes. This person could of had these shoes plated for some other use. I would NOT touch'em if in I were you. My rule is that if I even suspect something of haveing a nasty coating on it I DON"T TOUCH IT PERIOD.
  2. Mike, Those are some fantastic pieces. I wonder if the ball finials are cast or forged? On the door pull, was that inside or out. I am wondering why they painted it. Thanks for sharing and I am looking forward to more pictures. Tschuss
  3. Sam I am happy to assist. I have some quartersawn white oak tha has been air drying for four years now. I would be happy to make you a new handle and ship it off to you ( I have a Hofi hammer that I can copy.) PM me if you are interested.
  4. Even better than vinegar use citric acid. It will remove the rust much faster than just vinegar. You can watch the citric acid work, the surface if the metal is covered in tiny bubbles. When you pull them out they will have a black coating that you can wash in water. Check this post out this will give you a really good feel for rust removal. 5. Those are awesome tongs. They look heavy though.
  6. I would imagine that this goes without saying, no forge welding. I would make something small and no longer than ten minutes. You on your own with the historical knowledge though.
  7. Educational (1). That was some extremely valuable information Thomas.
  8. I would be happy to help make that pile smaller for ya.:D
  9. Went to Saugus Ironworks today. Had a fantastic time and an excellent tour from our Ranger, Brandon Chambers. I took some pictures and video, thought that you all might like to see this. Link to my photos link to NPS site for background information. Enjoy and discuss.
  10. Not sure if he is still active, but I have a great book that he wrote, Blacksmithing for the Woodworker. I highly recommend it.
  11. So last week I was lucky enough to pick up this little guy. Granted it is on the small side, but it was inexpensive and is in good condition. I just have to make tooling for it now. Pics for your viewing pleasure. The threads on the screw are really sharp, I just need to clean it up a bit as there is some dirt in the grease and the lube it. Overall not bad at all for the price.
  12. Jimmy thanks, And to all the rest of you Happy Thanksgiving.
  13. The last tool and die maker that I knew died 14 years ago. They are scarce these days.
  14. To achieve a 1hr fire rating you need a double layer of 5/8" type F Gyp Bd.
  15. As one Boston Area (Walpole) member to another, I would like to extend a welcome to stop by my shop anytime you are in he area.

  16. Glenn just smooth out the edge on your grinder/sander and file it like you would and axe or a drawknife. It doesn't have to be particularly sharp just keen. That is a rather poor discription but it is the best that I can do at the moment.
