  1. 4140 will make a bad hot slitting chisel because it is not very hard when its hot and it would lose its temper way too easily on a thin chisel it will work but poorly and it may need to be re hardened and re edged constantly to keep it from curling up inside the piece you are slitting and sticking on you
  2. mabe this will help explain it my laptop paint skills are not too good it would be to make dove tail tooling for those who want to make custom tool but don't have the ability to make the dovetail them self
  3. shop mate (two words)its not taken this anvil is clearly a great tool and this tool has many uses beyond blacksmiths we ade designing it as smiths but al other metal workers cold addapt it to better suit their needs this would be a tool useable by most metal workers especialy sheet metal workers if you made some blank dovetails out of flat bar and drilled countersunk and tapped them for 2 3/8th hex bolts than anyone could make their own tooling or convert older tooling easily with this pre made dovetail you could make spring fullers usefull for a single man shop with out a power hammer and you could mount a hockeypuck to o key makeing it usefull to sheet metal workers i have a setup like this with dovetail in a log to hold a pitch pot but every one could customize this with out much hassle of heavy equipment
  4. i have the cold demo season started up today, all that sold was a handful of key chains
  5. Blacksmith Anvil this is the only pic ive seen of these things it appears cast
  6. recently a demo anvil followed me home and so far i am happy a #43 "ACME" anvil with 5/8 hardie and ~3-8 pritchel a nice sharp horn mostly crisp edges and a flat face with only one weld splatter mark near the hardie
  7. a picture of the bottom of the horn or heel would help tremendously with the anvil ID
  8. i used a cast anvil for a year and a few different rocks before that and it is cast better than the anvils at HF and i have a used an anvil that looked a whole like that with no mark or pritchel it had a dull ring and was definitely not cast iron but some non heat treated steel do not go try and heat treat this just yet try a wire brush and do a bounce test on it not a grinder and a worst a 120G flap wheel just to get a better look at what you're dealing with or just go use it and tell us how it works
  9. i have an etsy page and its good and you can sell things however you wont sell things untill you sell 4 or 5 things to freinds via the site so pepole beleve you are reputiable and thats just the nature of the site and basic 3 month listings are $0.20 silver sells better than iron on etsy
  10. mine has the same nmbers on the inside and the letter U it is from a mail order catalog in the 1870's and to unstick the peices watch how they were assembled it dosenot work if they are put in backwards and just wrap it in papper towels and tinfoil and light oil it will usualy unstick it in a few days

  11. my first blower was flat belt driven made of plywood allexcept 2 brass strips witha hole to act as bushings and a 3/8 axle it was ingenous and worked well till it became a victum of a backfire
  12. i use this often but it is really hard to work by hand and i stary with new 3/4 round stock and it eats up grinder belts even when anealed after you harden it dont drop it before tempering it will shatter in to glass like fragments but it dose produce a nice blade if done right and this steel is NOT forgiveing if you messup over heat or hit to cold the peice is ruined
  13. i went to the local flea market and fpund a box vice with everything for 25$ a box vice has no post however i suspect this onewas at one time with a post due to the O/A touch marks about 2" below the forge weld whare something was cut off and the bracket is a normal postvice mount it has the markings "warrenten solid box" on the nut and "sheffield" stamped twice on the front jaw dose any one know anything about this or about when it was made
  14. yould be amased wha a big magnet will do in a shop cleaned out to gournd i went in and found 2 anvils tonks hardies a firepot and the whole lot he missed
