  1. Wait... are you wanting to use this for striking or for general forging by yourself?
  2. I went by the scrapyard again today. Picked up a 1-ton hand crank winch from the '20s and an 8ft section of minecart track for 22 bucks. I cleaned the winch up today and it looks like new. Not quite sure what I'll do with the track yet.
  3. Went to the scrapyard today and only spent $12. Got 3/4" round pieve to make drifts, some leaf springs for knives, and a 60lb hunk of railroad track! Striking anvil? :D
  4. It should already be heat treated unless you removed it before grinding it...
  5. I used a 13 dollar bathroom vent fan for abut 6 months. It worked great and I never had a problem with it. The only reason I stopped using it is beause I got a hand crank blower.
  6. Post a picture of one of your knives you don't like and we'll tell you how you can improve it. :)
  7. Well, if the two blowers and the drill press work, you might do alright. The vise is missing parts tht you'll have to make and the firepot is cracked. I really, really like the forge in the last picture though. If you were to clean everything up and sell them yourself you could probably double your money pretty easily.
  8. Not a lof of anvils I can find in Florida... and when I do they're always way overpriced. :|
  9. That's really nice for your first try. You can just get some natural lup charcoal and it'll definitely do a lot better than the brickettes. And I absolutely love your dog in that picture! n_n
  10. Wow, they key is awesome. I never would have thought to do that, but it looks really great. :D
  11. I have one just like it that I got at a flea market for $6. It's my absolute favorite hammer. I've seen them pop up on ebay and every time they've sold for around $90. I pound out the basic shape with my 4lb cross peen, then I finish it up with this one.
  12. Here's mine, it's about 1/2", and smaller stuff I just mark "Berry". :)
  13. Hah, either way I'ma put a handle on it and try it out. As long as it works, I don't care. :P
  14. I saw a thread where sam made an all metal sword where he rolled the handle, kind of like a socket. It looked really nice and comfortable. More unique than the standard twist. I can't help you with twisting thin metal, every time I try I have the same problem. :P
  15. I've had the most luck with slits or bars, as opposed to holes. Make them too small for the coke to fall through but large enough for the ash to fall through naturally.
  16. Just bought this for $15. It's 2"x2"x4". I'm guessing it's an old dog head or file cutters hammer, am I right or does this hammer have another use? Either way it's unusual and I'm sure I'll find something to do with it. :P
  17. I've never listened to any music while forging... The only electricity I have in my shop is for the lights. :P
  18. Put a few of them on ebay. Beginners looking to get into blacksmithing will surely find them there and I think you'd do well.
  19. I gave around 80 for mine and thought I got a great deal. Mine was in just as bad of shape as yours when I got it and I had to forge a new handle for it, but now it looks brand new and works perfectly. As long as the gears look alright and it turns, I think you'll feel like you got your moneys worth when you use it.
  20. Looks like a 100lb vulcan to me. They have a really small step like that so I'm sure the plate is still there and the logo is cast into the oposite side. Also, I think I can make out a 10 on the front of the feet.
  21. I'm not sure how tall they originally were, but you have the opertunity to make it the height that is most comfortable to you. Make it to where you don't have to hunch over or reach up while you turn the handle. Wherever it's most comfortable is where it needs to be. You'll be cranking it a lot.
  22. My very first anvil came from my dad. My second one I found on ebay. I still love and use both of them. :)
