Thomas the stem is rolled up like a jelly roll Punched a square tapered hole Forged the stem to a tapered square to match the hole Then riveted the stem to the base. The copper is left over from some buss bars that I made for a regional power company.

Thanks Beth It started out with the thought of being a fireplace poker but they can get kind of boring. So I thought I would let it go where it wanted to go and this is where it ended up. If I ever get a craving for Goats Head soup i'll have a use specific utensil to stir and serve it with :)

Spending only a couple hours in the evening in the forge but having fun playing around

It was pretty straight forward traced my hand with a soap stone on a piece of 1/2 " plate Cut it out with an O/A torch Then forged it into shape. I had to let the right hand know what the left hand was doing though. I had a ready reference close at hand :) Could also have used a hot cut but no one was looking so I broke out the smoke wrench. The quill turned out a little screwy ( I may re do it ) The whole thing took about 3 1/2 hours. Probally would have turned out better if I had taken a little time with it.
