I can cut one out and weld it up in less than an hour, so I would have to say it would save some cash. My first one took longer, but the next was easy.

I have one on my demo forge out of 1/4 plate and my main forge is 3/8, in 5 years neither is showing any wear. I try not to let the fire get to low to keep from burning the metal wich is more eficient anyway.

Keep in mind the tubing will be less likely to flex than ibeam. If you use the ibeam it will have a tendency to twist under stress, if you box it it will cure that problem.
Hope this helps.

Bob's design works verywell for me. I have one in my shop and my portable has one. The only thing I did different was to use wider flat bar so that my firepot is about 4" deep. Everyone that has used it has commented on how efficient it is. I use coal but I've been told it would also work with charcoal.

At my last eye exam, the Dr. said he recomends an auto sheild to anyone welding. He said it can save years of deteriation in full time welders eye sight. And the flash protection is worth it to me.

Go by the Blacksmith Shop in Colonial Williamsburg and look for a tall bearded young man named Nathan Walker and introduce yourself. He's one of our members and a great guy.
I'm sure he can help you on the interesting things.

I was given a Champion 400 Blower and Forge today from an old peanut C0. The handle is broken off and it's been in several floods so I know I've got to rebuild it. The firepot is missing. It's a big forge probably 3' x 4'. The fire pot was around 12'' round. If anyone has a picture or info on a similar settup I would apreciate them. It also looks like it may have had a hinged hood or wind break.
