  1. Do you just use water to mix it up, also any safety gear needed for use with it.
  2. Hey everyone, just got roughly 4-5 pounds of satanite and was wondering if anyone had any tips on how to use it. Never heard of the stuff till a while ago and it just arrived after a few months wait in a bulk buy with other people. Looking forward to trying it out so am after some tips to help keep the mistakes to a minimum. Won't be back for 2 weeks as am going to Tasmania for the holidays in another 2 sleeps. The steel I have at the moment is a few bars of 1095, 1084, 15n20, bit of 5160 and 52100 left as well as plenty of coil and leaf springs.
  3. If you want to see a Damascus one check out ali bastian in Australia, really nice bowie and smaller hunting knife.
  4. Hey everyone, been a while since I started a thread with any of my knives. Here is one I just finished, sorry about the photo I just sent it to the new owner today. Blade is coil spring, roughly 30mm wide, 2mm thick and think it was 150-190mm long. Handle is stabilised and coloured resin added and is ringed gidgee. First time I have done this style of handle, made it a bit thick near the bottom of the handle but hey its my first one. Vulcanised fibre spacers, brass spacer from piece of pipe, black micarta. Broke two pieces of micarta and made one to loose a fit, this one slid right on and needed a slight tap from the hammer for a perfect fit.
  5. Looks great, a few months ago I saw pics of a good smith On Australian blade forums and that was Damascus wood integrals. Had them shaped a bit like a keyhole slot, so that is what hey called them. Keyhole Integrals.
  6. Looks good, been thinking of making my own axe for a while now. The only thing is here in Australia we need to make them a bit heavier than most places else they wont bite too well, we have LOTS of dense wood species all around the place.
  7. Think most of us will be doing our own thing, if you are talking about the club that is. We finish up for chrissy this Saturday the 14th.
  8. Same thing I was thinking, the celts did take a design off a roman spatha and made it more curved. Is less angular etc... and made more for their slashing, chopping style of fighting. The look is what I like of that one.
  9. Looks good but reminds me a bit of a cooking knife in he blade profile. How large is it?
  10. Got a new gas bottle and for me problem solved. Had over an hour of forging my first piece of 1095, now to grab my anvil n stump from my local blacksmithing group so don't have to sit on the ground using a large piece of railway.
  11. I just got a gas forge and am having similar problems. Was fine yesterday but today kept on.... well you could call it chuffing, the flame would puff out then re-ignite. Think it may be the gas bottle is empty from what I could see with too much air in the mix with not enough gas is the reason I think.
  12. Looks good, but take the kitchen knife up to at least 400 grit since that way stuff won't stick to it as bad.
  13. Niiiice, good looking roo. Know a bloke that regularly makes birds out of scrap but nothing like this.
  14. Where's the knife from the avatar pic gone, if it is Nighthawk from abf that is ? You will find some good pics etc... of tools and that on here though as well as what books to get.
  15. People really like this design of yours hey. I really need to be able to make them similar like you are. Lucky me just sold my first knife though :D But yours look good and look like they are very similar, takes a bit of practice to do that.
  16. Gonna thicken it up or something, the few goanna's I've seen have all been more solid especially the neck. Othrwise it looks great.
  17. Wondered why I haven't seen you lately john. By the way I have ordered a gas forge off a bloke, should be ready to post this month. About $5-600 all up with burner etc... Drew is going alright, just saw him a few weeks back. He was trying to finish off something he started at everleigh.
  18. Me, duct tape and extra thick tissues for an emergency bandaid/bandage. Have cut myself fair bit when I was little mucking around with things, find this is great to use. Wrap/plug the wound with the tissue and wrap the duct tape around it, stays nice and tight and can seal the edges too. Will be almost leak proof. After that if needed get fixed up properly.
  19. Oh yes please do a wip, it looks fantastic and makes me want to have a crack at filework.
  20. WHOOLY XXXX is that fantastic or what. Do you mean that is a chain form a Harley Davidson used to make the sides of the blade, absolutely amazing pattern and colour there. Hope you are very proud of that knife, I would be.
  21. Can just see the hamon it is only a slightly different Shade to the rest of the blade. It actually looks a bit like what happened when I first tried using vinegar on one of my small forged blades to get rid of scale where about half of it( closer to the edge side) went a much darker colour to the rest of the steel. Didn't happen with the others I tried. Was pretty xxxx hard to rub off but did it with soapy water and a cloth.
  22. Looks great for the job. And Frosty, my grandfather has a story of goats eating that green plastic flexible garden fencing you can buy. After they did that they hopped into this blokes vehicle and ate the seats.
  23. Looks great, just think the guard may be a tad to long for this blade though.
  24. At my club all we have are some large drums, can't remember the size though. Have a upside down rectangular pyramid in the middle with a removable grate made out of thick checkerplate steel. The grate is a hunk of mild with a slot cut out. Around this it has firebricks on the edges to form a large u shaped area to stop the coke coming into contact with the other bits of metal, to keep it contained and so you can rearrange it to suit your work. Below that it has a metal pipe put through the back to pump air in, it runs through the drum just under the pot with a slot cut out as well. The pipe has a chunk of round steel welded to a rod in it which you pull and push to control air flow. Try and get some pics tomorrow.
  25. I really like the double pattern you have going on there, how did you get it to turn out like that wavy bit.
