Inspired by the The Sittingbourne Seax - Forge Along w/ Pictures
Aden Cassidy replied to Matthew Paul's topic in Knife Making
Nice, been thinking of making something like that. Almost did today actually when forging out some coil spring. (mini one) My only question is how do you make the handle fit the tang properly with something like this. -
Probably make a finger groove or something just before the edge so your fingers dont slip as easily and cut yourself. otherwise they look fantastic.

darkhouse spear
Aden Cassidy replied to jasonmichalski's topic in Spears, Arrows, Pole arms, Mace/hammer etc.
Nice looking bit of gear, but isn't something like that called a Trident. Did you actually catch the fish using that WOW, my grandfather used to do a bit of spear fishing underwater when he was younger. By the way what sort of fish are those. -
Nice, but to me it looks more like the roman gladius minus the round handle, reminds me of the sword you see in the movie Troy that Achilles uses.

GO to engraverscafe.com to see how do do simple inlay, unlike the intricate one above. Simply stunning.

proper heat treat for 51XX leaf spring?
Aden Cassidy replied to homeshow's topic in Heat Treating Knives, Blades etc
What i generally do it at, by hand hammering though. Have only had trouble with it cracking once, made a BIG chopping blade for bush outings was working around with,(was going to see how it went then sell it) Quenched in hot oil, looked fine, good weight, big but not too top heavy, could've made an improvised axe. Got home and decided not to temper it right away, next morning big crack from the side curving inwards. -
Can make it easier to get a tight fit, played around with threadimg some for leather handled knife recently and helped get a tight fit, you then either solder/braze in place, weld or countersink the hole, cut the threaded part just a little long and give it a few wacks with the hammer to make sure it doesn't come loose. Probably also good with the delicate and more rare/fragile of handle materials. Here is one on australian blade forums that is done by peter del raso. http://www.australianbladeforums.com/vb4/showthread.php?7067-Ivory-bowie-amp-engraving&p=62266#post62266

Think I remember reading in a Blacksmithing book from highschool bout 2-3 years ago that Indonesia or somewhere they used citric acid on their patterned steel blades and it made it an orangy colour. I think the book was Alex W. Bealers second edition.

Looks a bit like a ganga ram? Looks great, similar to what I want to make myself.

It is very nice alright, is that a bit of a hamon I can see.

Love it, hope I can do half as well after a year or 2 of practice starting this year. very, Very amazing pattern contrast you have going there.

He everyone, hope you all had a good Christmas. I have a piece of wood I cut from a tree here at home a few months back and shoved in the oven twice for about an hour or 2 each time, it has only a small crack in the bottom of it that I do not want to get any bigger. I cut this piece and a larger blocky bit off because where we had trimmed the tree back early last year there were no cracks in the branches on the end, unlike the other kind of tree next to it. How do I treat this so that nothing will happen, what kind of glue would be best as I want to use this for a cooking knife's handle. It kind of reminds me of a piece of deer antler from the way it slightly curves and widens at the base.

how do you forge a bevel on a straight blade
Aden Cassidy replied to thunderforge777's topic in Knife Making
Or if you want to make it all thin put a bevel on the other side and after you do both bevels (basically at the same time) you can then flatten the middle of the blade where it starts to look like a diamond when looking from the tip/tang downwords. I made a blade like this, haven't finished it, it was a practice piece to see what I could do. Have to find it and finish it. Sort of dagger like with a rounded tip.(mine still has the thickest bit in the middle though). -

Finishing work on Knives.
Aden Cassidy replied to Aden Cassidy's topic in Finish and Polish for Knives
I was going to hand sand the rest of it, it's what I am used to doing. Just not sure which grit I should go to for a general work, camping knife etc... -
Only have a cheap ryobi grinder, finest belt I can get for it is 120 grit. Wondering if that is a good finish for a working knife or what is the minimum you would use personally. Leaf spring blade. 1400mm long blade, 1200mm handle. Blade at widest is over 30mm, 5mm thick near guard tapering to 1.2-3mm near tip. High carbon guard, will have leather handle, maybe mild steel spacer(1-2 give your opinion) and mild steel but cap when I get some new stock tomorrow.(need thicker mild steel).

good, small, able looking knife.

Does bluing the blade with the hot gunsmithing stuff safe, have been thinking about it myself but don't know if there is any harm to it. What effects does it have if any if it is a hunting blade used for quartering game etc...( third party raised thisto me)

My god do they look good, really been wondering about how to do the copper/steel mouth on the sheaths myself. Always loved that style.

Pics so that we know what kind of tang it is, design, shape etc...

Like the damascus pattern, handle looks good colour and grain if overly chumky for my own tastes. Never seen olive wood as a handle before, looks interesting.

heat treating a double edged knife
Aden Cassidy replied to Brad L's topic in Heat Treating Knives, Blades etc
Back of the neck with a shotgun when I put down a pig did nicely, fall in less than a second and only moving cause of nerves. Had my mums uncle tell me a while ago that when he was younger and got together with other rellies etc... for pigging all but one had a centrefire rifle and the last had a 12g semi-auto shotty for pigs appearing out of the bush or ravines/gullies around where they used to hunt and needed firepower stat, no time to aim properly.
