  1. Did you take the hardness out of the ball end? If not you may end up with flying chunks of steel.
  2. the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything So long and thanks for all the fish!
  3. Keep an eye on peoples locations when they post then pm them. I know there are some in the St. Louis area maybe they will see your post. I am in southern Iron county about 2.5 hours south of St. Louis.
  4. The Missouri Pacific RR was bought out by UPRR in the early '70's. I grew up next to a MoPac line. I have one of these that looks like it was never used. I wish it has from the old MoPac.
  5. I will take pictures and document it. I am waiting for her to draw up just what she wants and then get started on it.
  6. Stormcrow, these are awesome! When I showed my wife she said make me one, OK if I borrow the basic design?
  7. What ever works is all good! my wife has a hand made silver necklace in the same design she loves. Thanks for the info/
  8. My wife fell in love with it when I showed her, I think it is beautiful to. Details on how you made it please, is Rashelle correct?
  9. how thick and heavy is the counterweight? It might do better than the track, it has a lot of possabilitys. I have a 100# piece of 2" plate that maces a good anvil.
  10. Well. some would say my area is anvil rich. I could prob find at least 3 for sale this coming weekend with-in 50 mi. All over priced but for sale. There is a 80lb PW in a farm supply store that is beat to heck, with large chunks out of the face for $425 FIRM. I consider the area poor because there is never a good one at a reasonable price. Also there is a used tool shop about 75 mi. away that has at least a couple of post vises and last time I was there he had 4 post drills.
  11. Something my Dad told me one time, he wasn't talking about smithing but it applies to everything in life. It's not what you have but what you do with it! - J. Roy White
  12. Are the links electrically welded on the sides of the links like a modern chain, or are they forge welded on the ends of the links?
  13. Rich and Steve, I missed the actual class due to not having internet at home and have not had much shop time this year. I do appreaciate the effort you both put into the class and have read the entire class section at least twice and will read it again when I have a chance to put it into practice. You guys did a great job and I regret not being able to attend and keep up with it as it was happining. Jerry
  14. "The Celtic Sword" by Radomir Pleiner $357.98 at amazon,Wow I won't be getting this book anytime soon!
  15. 4 walls and a roof so I can make it into a shop, heck I would be happy just to have a roof!
  16. That anvil is not destroyed, just broke-in. I have a Mouse Hole just like it a very useable anvil. If you save it from the scrap pile it will still be going strong avter we are all gone!
  17. Looks good, have you used it yet? If not you will be amazed at how much better it works than the straight ones.
  18. I was talking to a safety guy from the local propane co a couple of weeks ago about this. He told me that the metal will absorb the propane. I have been thinking about making bells out of some old 100# tanks but havent got the nerve up yet!
  19. I have a piece of 2" plate that I use for an anvil and it works great, 110 lb's all under the working surface. I took a log and cut a notch in it just a little over 2" wide and made wedges out of some 3/8" rod. I stand the plate on end in the notch and drive in the wedges to hold it in place. It never moves.
  20. Great idea on the stand, I know several people that use steer horns for drinking cups who would be interested in a stand. I have been told that there is a leather co. that sells horns for around $20 online. I will have to look them up.
  21. Unfortunately I would love to have most of the anvils he shoots. I have never watched him although he lives about 45 miles away from me and does several anvil shoots in the area. I have talked to several people that have watched him and some of the anvils are pretty decent.
  22. Wife bought me my first at a used tool store, turned out to be a cast iron aso but thats ok, She bought it for me, I'll keep it. Found my second , a mousehole broken through the hardy hole at a scrap yard, 127# for $100. Got my third at a farm store, it was on commission, a 75# Lakeside in very good condition. Paid to much but I really like that anvil.
