  1. Welcome to IFI, Frank, and to the addiction of blacksmithing. There is a wealth of info on this site and a wealth of experienced smiths to help answer questions along the way. Please do keep us posted as to your progress and pics of your projects. Good luck to you. :)
  2. Kube, I'm not saying that they aren't right. They look good. That was just my personal preference. :)
  3. Hey Kube, good job. I'm with ptree, though. I also make and have an assortment of left and right hand pigtails on hand at the camps/demos that I do. I sell quite a few leftys. Keep up the good work. Oh, just a personal preference to note. I'd put the handle loop on the bottom. Just my preference. Thanks for sharing the pix.
  4. I have my 150# Trenton traveling/demo anvil on a stump. My 250# Trenton shop anvil is mounted atop a 2X12 box (2X12s are vertical) that is filled with sand. The shop floor is concrete, and the box full of sand helps keep the bounce out of it and also seems to deaden the ring, somewhat. :)
  5. Check out this item on ebay!! This is nuts!!!! http://www.ebay.com/itm/3-Antique-18th-C-Iron-Hearth-Cooking-Skewers-Blacksmith-Made-Primitive-Metalware-/160698432922?pt=Folk_Art&hash=item256a5f7d9a#ht_1239wt_989
  6. Great looking rose, Jeremy. I really like the way that the colors show in the photo. Thanks for sharing it with us. :)
  7. The last time that I contacted Larry, he was pretty busy and was a little slow getting back with folks. He did get my order filled and shipped, but it took a few extra days. :)
  8. I've not had that problem. But my suggestion would be to stand UPwind. :)Sorry, just couldn't resist.
  9. On page 228 of Anvils In America, it show a picture and gives a brief description of a "WEST" anvil with an inverted triangle logo that has a W in the center of it. It states that "these anvils were manufactured from vanadium steel from an electric furnace, which makes a very good anvil". :)
  10. Can you post any pics of the anvil? Take pics of the sides and front and rear view of the feet/base. Also, edit your profile to give your location. You may have some smiths located near you. :)
  11. I like "Trees and Giraffes". Or maybe deer. :)
  12. Hey Dennis. Add your location to your profile so that it shows up under your picture. May be someone close by you that can help. :)
  13. Kendall, it looks like it could still be a very serviceable anvil. The edges do not have to be sharp. If I need a pretty sharp edge for a square corner i use the jaws of my leg vice. Not sure what you paid, exactly, but it seems that you were satisfied with the price. I would use it as is and don't forget hearing protection. :)
  14. I was thinking the same thing that Bentiron said. It looks very much like a Vulcan. I, too, think that the price is too high for that one. I'd ask if he has any others that he'd consider selling, while you're there. As Phil said, do the rebound test on them and don't just "settle" for any anvil. For that money, get a good one. :)
  15. Dan, you're a hoot!! They'd run me outa town for sure, if I had an AK in the back window. :)
  16. IF....it came with a Mauser, there's a real good chance that it is metric. :)
  17. Either a gun cleaning rod or ram rod for a small caliber muzzle loader. :)
  18. That's one very big trap!! The man had to have had a great sense of humor, and a bunch of skill, to make one like that. RIP Deloy.
  19. Welcome to IFI and to the addiction. Once you get started smithing, you won't ever want to stop. Good luck. :)
  20. Now that is cool. Thanks for sharing the video. :)
  21. Phil, that one makes the most sense. After your post, I looked at the pics again and it makes perfect sense why the bottom die does not protrude above the edge of the bottom opening. Thank you. :D
  22. Lots of good ideas. Thomas, there is no patent number or any other markings on it. It says LITTLE GIANT on both sides and nothing else anywhere. here's a couple of close up pics of the dies. Top Die Bottom Die The bottom die has a very shallow divet in the center of it.
