  1. scars? Definitely however I seem to have a bit of the Neanderthal gene so no fear of ever going bald so hidden they will be! Thanks friends.
  2. While the concept of aluminum dust and rusted steel dust mixing in a dust collector is real the ignition thereof is unlikely at best. The addition of magnesium ribbon, sparklers WM etc as an ignition source is thankfully not common. That said the very purchase of powdered aluminum and ammonium nitrate will usually get you put on some form of watchlist.if you add that to the discussions about the pros/cons of fighting vehicle armor no matter how vauge they may be ? Just a thought !
  3. I'm not familiar with your wire however 'traditional' flux for the soldering of steel was/is spirits of salts which I that I believe you call muratic acid? or some Zink (battery outer casing) (Zink/carbon) dissolved in(hydrocloric) acid.
  4. Dear ciron,, upon rereading my post it seems as if I was being critical of you and that was not my intention, I'm certain that one would not expect any such effect from 'bare' metal though it would seem common sense with galvanized or cadmium plated metal. Regards Ian
  5. Hey, Joey it's great to see a guy that thinks laterally, you know there are guys out there that literally waste minutes out there buying buckets of spikes as scrap when they need only get a knife or two and make some! Cool video BTW. Regards Ian
  6. Firstly I'm glad you made it through! Now, read and remember! WELD IN A WELL VENTILATED SPACE!!!!!! Bear in mind that steel is one of many products where "keeping it clean" is not considered part of the supply chain requirements. So it can easily get contaminated by anything from cat poop to hydraulic oil etc. At any point along said supply chain.
  7. Well, it looks more like "I came ,I saw and I took pictures! as opposed to my son's version "I went ,I saw and I selfie 'd. Alan , thank you very much for the multitude of pictures, sadly my eyesight has yet to recover enough for me to figure it out but I have hope! Furthermore I'm happy to see that I was correct in my recollection that it was a mill and not just some "stretcher". Hopefully we can collectively post drawings to assist each other in the workings?
  8. Smell and taste seem unaffected,(except single malt doesn't seem as good as it did) however my blood glucose levels are all over the chart they recon its temporary but for now I'm on a diabetic diet(read none of the good stuff), Frosty those "random odors " are called farts. Alan it would seem modern surgeries are sort of art and crafts using glue and staples! Charles, yes peel it open cut a couple of holes(oddly. square not round) fiddle around inside pop the lids back with some superglue, put the flap back and staple closed sort of easy peasy
  9. Ditto to all of the above! however some additional info- you can do DIY electro Polishing, albeit on a smaller scale than an 8 x 4 sheet and a Makita 6032 power file with the right belts will certainly help you get closer to a good finish!
  10. Considering "honest Abe" used to incaserate his political opponents without trial below the gatehouse of the military base on Alcatraz you have to be really old Bud
  11. Yes, I did ask for the staples and he laughed, he noted that my wife had accompanied me into the surgery section but left pretty sharpish when he took the staple removing tool out he then also said the government might Want to kick him about a bit if they got the idea that he might not be disposing of " medical waste" in the approved manner. So No billet! Anyhow thank goodness they were low carbon.
  12. A quick update . I'm doing well! ihad the second(last) set of staples removed today(could'nt believe they had used 45) anyhow the the doctors were cuffed at just how quickly I've recuperated. I suppose that means I can try going for a mile long walk this evening(I recon if I tried I would have to report back on just how severe a kicking I got from the dearly beloved. I would very much like to thank you all for the prayers, kind thoughts and well wishes over the last three weeks, it really has been a boon in some dark moments. Thank you friends. Ian
  13. A prayer for a good cause! my thoughts are with the both of you. Ps. Mikey in some things it's best NOT to copy the behavior of others. I hope you start recovery as quickly and painlessly as Mine.
  14. Thu you all for the well wishes, fortunately I have great medical care and attentive(read loving) friends and family, this afternoon is the first time I've been able to see well enough to see the screen on the tablet , so it would seem I'm on the mend
  15. Stunning work as always Andrew! 300 - 400Kg's is actually quite light for tubing as its very strong. Think o's a pile of bricks on scaffolding? The verticals are deceptively strong. Before I could afford the decent benders I used to take 50mm tubing to the local exhaust bloke ant he would bend it up for me sort of while you wait and I could tweak as well worked like a charm
  16. Well poking at those pictures didn't take long sorry could not help myself they didn't load. Welcome to the forum none the less
  17. Hi All, Sadly I had a blood vessel burst on my brain last Thursday night, despite the obvious problems of a 6 d 3cm blood clot on the brain, it has affected my eyesight. Whilst I have been in intensive care my wife has been a pillar of strength for me. So my friends I ask that you keep us in your prayers until this test has passed many thanks Ian.
  18. Wow, I just love this thread! Such interesting folk. Latticino, I don't know if you're aware but in the Cairo museum they have boomerangs that came out of an Egyptian tomb! They are in a small nondescript display case somewhat off the beaten track, about as far as you could get from the 'main' attractions of 'Tutankhamen's tomb ' and they look just like Australian curios.
  19. no need to bring ammo or guns, we have plenty here
  20. Well then good luck on the new venture!
  21. This side things ain't going too well, physically and health wise we are fine but the powers that be are determined to wreck our economy! The first time I came 1$ cost me R7 second time $1 cost me R 10 now $1 is R 13 something closer to R14 . The Government claims 6% inflation but in reality it's at 18% that makes living tricky and rustling up a spare $30 k plus Gets harder by the day for this struggling blacksmith I'm trying to acclimatize myself to giving up a few unessential luxuries like food , shelter and clothing and the travel budget's deficit can be amended. Any thoughts on heading this way? It's really cheap this way(for you that is) Fortunately we have our priorities sorted so we have budget's for single malt despite the exchange rate ! Ian
