    I got a boy from the church interested in smith'n . His parents love me,cause he' s very energetic [think hard to keep up with]: anyway, HE said he joined IFI and uses the handle dts12. I can't find any of his post? How do you find other folks on this site? HE keeps ask'n me to reply , and I say I see you every Sat. Thanks .

    Thank you Bigfoot! I read in one of my books[i forgot the title] 1.Harden at a cherry red,inthe dark 2.Quench in oil , then burn the oil off 3 times;because oil flashes at 600F THis should give a spring temper

    CLAY, USE 100% clay kitty litter it's pretty cheap. STEEL' construction sites have scrap rebar just ask the foreman. Scrap yards have all kinds of steel ,coil springs,leaf springs ,tie rods ,etc...; some you can haggle on the price but be careful they are busy. I hope this helps.

    Chuck ,I don't think rr spikes will heat treat.[not enough carbon content] Shine it up anyway , it is good practice & will make a good letter opener.

    Dodge ,that's it. I have cut off a chunk & heat treated . It will harden, but I guess it depends on the manufacturer. Still the Army specs would negate that idea;{if I ever find them, but I do have a stock #}! Thank ya'll for the help!!!!

    pault17 :I haven't found the specs. yet ! They are about 1.5 inches sq. ,then taper to a long round solid handle.

    I have several 4-ft. pry bars ;we use them for various jobs on tanks & other military vehicles. I am trying to find out what type of steel they are made from? Thanks in advance for any help!

    cLAY CAT LITTER WILL WORK :IF YOU DON'T WANT TO GO WITH PURE ASH. I, would put the clay in first then let the ash build up on it. [ i think ash is acidic, so the clay will act as a buffer?]
