  1. Would have you read the thread if it was titled "No table room" ? (grin)

  3. Chopper is an old handle. Rumor has it that at one time he lived in the Sahara Forest.

  5. Why is it that when you clean off a work table it then becomes magnetic? I spent a full day cleaning the junk off my work table to have room for a project. The project was completed and the work table somehow became magnetized. It attracted a spare 14 inch tire (donut), two decoration rims from around the headlights of a truck, a cat litter box (and cat by evidence in the litter box), and the list continues, including a small plow for laying out rows in a garden, and the neighbors light with broken glass, from his light post. I am afraid that if I built another table, it would develop the same problem. Is there some way to de-magnetized a work table so as NOT to attract things?
  6. Happy Birthday Dale, spend some time at the forge to celebrate.
  7. The thinner and sharper the hardie cutter, the better it cuts through hot metal. AND the better it works on cutting flesh, meat, and bone. Remove it from the anvil immediately after you finish using it. DO NOT use the face of the anvil while any tool is in the hardie hole.

    Burns..

Just by chance, a foot and boot fits nicely into a 5 gallon bucket water. Bringing a 5 gallon bucket of fresh water to the forge is just one more safety precaution. The effort pays dividends when a flaming appendage is thrust into the "clean" water. A 5 gallon bucket of water can be moved to a fire, where you would have to go locate a garden hose, locate a spigot, connect the two and etc etc, or find a container (larger than a water glass) to transport water from the slack tub to the fire. Quick quiz: In the excitement of trying to put out a fire, how many trips with a water glass equals a 5 gallon bucket of water?
  9. Where are you located? Go to the top of the forum page, click on User CP, then edit profile, then to the bottom of that page and type in your general location and save.
  10. You want to request information on how to preform illegal activities? And you want to post that request on a public forum for all to see? Remember that we have more than a few LEO's (law enforcement officers) as forum members. Why not contact UMBA and just request permission to copy the material to your laptop?

  12. Kalsme'n the original tredle hammer keyboard :)
  13. What is considered cold, and when is it too cold to weld? Do you preheat, weld, and post heat to let it have a controlled cooling? What is the procedure to welding when the steel is cold.
  14. Building a scrap pile is not the same as stocking a resource center. And it is not something you can do it over night, you have to work at it. Choose the things you can use, get permission, and bring a truck. Remember that when one fellow has too many 55 gallon drums, another has too many rail road spikes, another too much tool steel and yet another more widgets than exist anywhere else in the world, it is NOT all in one place. Scrap and resources are where you are located. Happy hunting, and use the TPAAAT technique only if all else fails. Otherwise you may throw off the compass reading in your local area.

  16. When was the last time you took time to secure a piece of work to the table top with clamps, chains, tack welds etc? The question arose when an assembly moved when the welding spudder balls and swarf acted like ball bearings and project came to rest closer than I would like to the table edge. Do you take any extra precaution when making "light" lifts in the 50-200 pound range? Everyone gets out of the way when you lift thousands of pounds into the air, but they will work under, or walk under, lighter loads. Any stories you wish to post so the rest of us can recognize trouble when we see it?
  17. What is a good size (and height) for a welding table? How heavy should it be constructed? This would be for layout, assembly, and as a all around welding table. Are there any special features that should be included to make the welding table more user friendly?
  18. There never seems to be a good place to put things so what is a good size (and height) for a forge table? How heavy should it be constructed? This would be used for holding tools, cool hot metal, etc. and be located next to the forge.
  19. What is a good size (and height) for a work table? How heavy should it be constructed? This would be for layout, assembly, and as a all around work table.
  20. Thank you for posting the correct link.
  21. A caution about welding on drums. The heat of the welding can vaporize the contents of the drum, and if you break through the metal (blow a hole in the metal) it can ignite the vapors. Boom is not a nice noise.
  22. Great ladle (pun intended) What is the brand of the manual typewriter on the desk?
