How much do you pay for propane in your state? (or country.)

Featured Replies

I'm curious to see how much everyone pays for propane for their forges. I'm in California which has the highest prices in the country, so this should be interesting.

If i purchase under 20 gallons of propane, the price is $3.27/gallon.

If i purchase more than 20 gallons, the price is $2.79/gallon

Prices do not include sales tax.

So a typical BBQ tank costs $14.75 plux tax to fill up.

Most places in Southern California charge a lot more for propane. My local gas station wants nearly double.

I just called Murdoch's ( a farm and ranch supply place like Tractor Supply or Big R) which is where I usually fill up because it is the closest, about 6-7 minutes away, and they are at $3.49/gallon ( $US 0.92/liter).  I'd call the other bulk suppliers but its Saturday afternoon and they are not open.  In the past when I have compared prices they were all pretty comparable.  Exchange places, e.g. Blue Rhino, are famous for high prices and short fills.

Prices vary significantly in Alaska but it averages between about $2.60 and $4.20 / gal. Today.

Most BBQ tanks are 20lb. / 5gl.

silver city new mexico at the propane supplier, its 3.49 a gallon plus the sales tax of 8.75 percent.

It's over $3 a gallon here in  North Texas. I'm not sure the exact price because I haven't bought any in a long time and I had a full tank. I'm dreading filling that sucker back up again though

We haven't used the small BBQ 20 pound tanks in a long time. Our forge tank is 115 lbs (I think 40 gal) and the price to top it off is the same $1.99 a gallon. It's in the background of the forge picture.

I run 100lb. tanks in the shop but have to take them in to refill. Funny thing a few years ago the place I take them just exchange tanks so I have nice up to date inspection stamps on my tanks. The guys who fill the house propane tank don't fill small tanks, "they don't have a way to meter the propane or weigh the tank?" Makes me wonder if they just guess at the house tank, they don't weight it either.

On the other hand I can understand the delivery guys not wanting to get hung up refilling BBQ tanks and such.

A 9kg gas bottle (that's a 20lb tank in americanese ) costs between $30 and $35 AUD to swap or refill in Brisbane, Australia, at the moment. You might find cheaper if you shop around.

Cheers,

Jono.

Wow... i had figured we'd pay excessive prices for Propane like we do for gasoline here in California. Huh.. surprising.

The prices of propane have me thinking I'm going to build myself a charcoal forge or something to supplement. I dread taking my big tank back for a fill up

Last time i had a tank filled, 20# for my torpedo heater, it cost me $18. This is one of my biggest reasons for switching to coal. 3T of coal cost me ~$500 and lasts me about 2-2 1/2 years, where as i was going through ~$100 a month in propane. Granted my little home made forge and burner were provably quite inefficient but i still do not think i could get fuel cost lower than coal with out making my own charcoal.

Also bought a new torpedo this past winter. My old one would go through a 20# tank in about 8-10 hours. My new one heats just as well but the propane lasts  closer to 30 hours.
