January 28, 20224 yr Author Its all going together now but having trouble shimming the bearings, has tight and loose spots, i found a chart witch recommended about 6 thou for the clearance but no way i can get that with out it nipping up
January 28, 20224 yr I would say that 0.006 is an awful tight clearance for a machine like that given it's age and all. Have you used some plastic gauge to verify that clearance?
January 29, 20224 yr Author It has cast iron insert bearings and a 2.5" shaft. I am going to get the shaft remade and fitted and someone from the shop will need to come to my place with a box hone to do the bearings. I might of lured a tool maker to my place to give it a check over some time soon and he can tell me what needs to be done. I believe if its set up right it will make my life more easy. Got new springs made and welded up and re drilled the holes for the pivot pins. I remade that spring retainer rod but cut it too short for the lock nuts so I had to re do that.
February 4, 20224 yr Author Had an accident fitting the motor mount and cut through one of the belts and gave my self a black eye with the chainblock. To fit new belts I now have to remove everything and lift the crankshaft.
February 4, 20224 yr When I was positioning my PH I placed it right under one of the steel trusses holding the shop roof up just to be able to use a come-a-long to lift parts in place. I'm glad it was your eye and not your teeth though. Going to call your hammer Ralph? (ref The Honeymooners "bang...zoom...right to the moon!)
February 4, 20224 yr I have found out the power hammers pack quite a punch. Both when you are hammering steel or when the hammer is punching you. I have the same routine when I have to change my belt on the Star hammer, break apart the crankshaft and have my wife there as a spotter (just in case).
February 5, 20224 yr Author I might mount a steel bar inbtween the rafters to put the chain block on, I am also going to get someone to help, got a few days work at a big blacksmiths shop in town so wile I am there I will forge the new togel links.
February 18, 20224 yr Author I think my phase converter is not enough to make the motor start, hammer has a prewar 3hp 3 phase motor, its 2 kms to the closest 3 phase line, I am going to try and up the phase converters motor

March 1, 20224 yr Author Got it together now, what a huge job it has been, will bend the split pins over when I know it doesn't need to come apart again.
March 20, 20224 yr Author The hammer has been set up for some kind of tooling, I suspect the sow plate has been lowered, the dovetail in the sow plate is damaged and beyond repair. Its actually worse than it looks, thats compacted scale and oil making it look solid, it just crumbles away, I am going to see about getting a new one made, is there a chart for dovetail sizes ? Would be good to give the info the shop doing the work,
April 7, 20224 yr Author Getting a new sowplate made in 1045 steel, I am getting it made 2" higher, also had to grind the top block flat on its face and I am making a new dovtail key as it had some hand forged rubbish. The new sow plate is costing over 3/4 of what I payed for the hammer

April 18, 20224 yr Author Thats a 12" round bar getting CNC milled down, that block of steel cost 1k it was hard to find to, big waiting lists for things now, I was luckily to get it,
April 30, 20224 yr Author When I was driving the bottom block key out the side flaked off the hand hammer with such force it put a ding in the wall.
