So, a fly press showed up for 100 online near me and tommorow im going to go see it and ideally buy it. I don't have a make, or size all I have is this picture... 

Does anyone have an idea about any detials of it or anyrhing I should check before handing over my money?

 

Check the frame for cracks. See how many leads the screw has. Make sure it runs nicely up and down. For US$100 It would already be in my shop!  Even if I just used it as a dedicated holder for my touch mark!

How many leads would be good? And yeah haha that was my thought too! Worst case easier to use a touch mark, best case it can move some metal for me... The price is hard to pass up

I gather that most proper fly presses have three or four leads. If it only has one, it's not going to move fast enough to deform the metal before the metal gets cold.

Just looking at the photo, I'm guessing it's got three, which is fine. Will you go and buy the thing already?!?

What is it about Rhode Island and cheap fly presses, anyway? That's where Latticino got his, too!

(Actually, I know the answer to that question: tooling left over from when RI was a center of the American jewelry industry.)

At that price I would even pick up a screw press, (2 leads == screw press, 3+ leads == flypress)  My large screwpress is not great for forging but it's wonderful for flattening and straightening hot metal and making parallel sides on a piece. (And I also paid about US$100 for it...) Mines a lot like the one in this picture; too dark in my shop to get a good picture with my archaic phone..

Looks a bit like mine also, even the cast table. Like mine a little light for serious forging use, but still a nice addition to the shop (and you can't beat the price ).

I'm feeling cool tool deal envy. I already have more tools than I use but I'd love a screw or fly press.

So everyrhing works but looks like I need to do a small repair.

I did clear enough paint to read it was made by H Blundell co and pat. 1871

 

And also counted 4 leads(if I counted them correctly)
