pnut
In the city if you can have a BBQ grill you should be able to use a charcoal forge. Mine only smokes until the kindling is burned and then there's no real smoke or very little anyway. Good luck and keep everyone posted on the progress. ThomasPowers
I like to make dishing hammers from the RR bolts. I've done them with both centered handles and off set to the rear handles to allow for deep dishing things like early medieval pots. The deep dishers work best for me if the bolt is bent a bit so it follows your swing. I source my RR steel at my local scrapyard. Less hassle. Binesman
That's a nice pile of fun. Remember the moto of "in rust with trust" with unkown metal, beyond that you can learn a lot for a little when using it.
ThomasPowers
Remember that the sort of ampersand looking rail clips generally have around twice the carbon content of a HC RR spike. (And plain auto springs have better hardenabilty than either of those.)

Binesman
That's a 3/4" burner so 1" hole. As for how far in with that hard brick id say as little as possable.

Mikey98118
If you slice out the area between the forward and aft holes in that burner, its performance will improve a whole lot; just a thought.
Frosty
Fine a proper refractory to make the forge from. Those look like concrete pavers but probably fire place brick, pavers would've broken up by now. Take a look in Forges 101 for pictures and descriptions of effective propane forges. As somebody around here keeps saying, the forge and the burner are components of a machine, not two separate things. Okay, that's a paraphrase but that's the spirit of the thought. Frosty The Lucky.
