Just using charcoal produced and using all the pyrolysis gasses to help make it would be so much easier, simpler and quieter. (not requiring a blower, save for a much smaller one for the forge.

You note he mentions that the rate of gas evolution changes during use meaning it's harder to keep the burn to reducing and not fluctuating between reducing to oxidizing.

I also don't think the burn barrels will last very long with a blown fire in them.
