BlasterJoe
Made this cork screw out of a railroad spike. I used Mark Aspery’s pass through technique. This is my first go and it’s pretty rough. I will definitely be making more.

SFC Snuffy
I've been too chicken to try it. Did you quench the screw?
ausfire
Clever idea, nicely executed! I worry that he screw would be too mild to work well in a tough cork though. I guess you'll just have to try it. Pity they don't make high-carbon rail spikes.
SLAG
Case harden it? SLAG.
ThomasPowers
Superquench; the HC ones are near the upper limit for mild steel.
rockstar.esq
If you decided to make more of them, you might run the stock through the other way so the spike head is more comfortable to hold. Alternately, you could twist the head 180 degrees and have a decorative effect.

I did water quench it just for good measure. 13 hours ago, ausfire said: Clever idea, nicely executed! I worry that he screw would be too mild to work well in a tough cork though. I wouldn't go much thinner than an 1/8 inch round on the screw. I will let you know if we run into any problems as we use it. Rockstar, That's a good idea on the twists. its not the most comfortable right now so I might do that with this one.
