November 20, 20178 yr The head is solid 4140 with just the cutting edge hardened and tempered. This is my first try and file work so its not the greatest but I’m fairly happy with it
November 20, 20178 yr Excellent. I like everything about this one (only very small suggestion would be to use a slightly narrower steel wedge for the handle). An axe to be proud of. Punching and drifting that cross section of tool steel must have been a bear.
November 20, 20178 yr Author Yes I should’ve used a smaller wedge but it’s what came with the handle so I used it. The hardest part of punching the eye was keeping it straight all the way down through!
November 28, 20178 yr Author Thanks guys. The starting stock was 3/4” x2 1/2” by a little over 6” long if I remember correctly.
November 28, 20178 yr This is beautiful, I love the bearded axes. The file work must have taken you forever to do haha.
December 11, 20178 yr Well done! This is one of the items on my must do list. I love the form you incorporated into this piece. Did I say “well done!”?
April 16, 20188 yr Author Thanks guys it was my first time doing file work so I was kinda winging it! I used both a power hammer and a hydraulic press for different stages of the forging.
