Charles R. Stevens
Many of us are now grandparents (some great grandparents or more) their comes a point that all grandchildren are your grandchildren.
Glenn
A block of modeling clay will help keep him interested and practicing with the hammer. Also give you some down time while he works out problems on his own.
Glenn
Spats are not a new idea. Just make sure they are in addition to good foot wear. Plastic flip-flops or bare feet are not suitable at the forge for safety reasons.
MastaStan
Thanks Glenn, no, definitely no unsuitable footwear allowed. I've ordered some genuine leather work boots, gloves and apron in his size. To be fair to myself though....on the day he was wearing cotton joggers/hoodie, leather football boots and Kevlar gloves(albeit a tad big for him) And didn't forget the specs! Didn't do too bad
ThomasPowers
What my Australian steel toed flipflops don't count as safety shoes?]
JHCC
I sometimes toy with the idea of getting a pair of klompen (Dutch wooden shoes) and adding a leather upper to keep scale, cinders, and slugs from falling in.
bluesman7
You may also tell him that if he did get something down a boot or shoe, stepping into the slack tub would not be a bad idea. I've heard of people who were badly burned, while trying to remove a boot, not even thinking of this. I'm not sure that I would have either. Charles R. Stevens
And gloves, they are a mixed blessing in the forge. They generate a bad habit of handling unknown steel buy hand, grab a piece of 500f steel and buy the time you relies it, you now have a hot glove you cannot get off fast enugh. I typicaly do hot work gloveless, and cold work gloved. Pant legs ove boots, and if mom buys him to long a pants roll the cuffs to the inside. Caught my self on fire with a set of over long overalls cuffed to the outside.
