Crytin
I'm currently looking at purchasing a possible anvil. The owner says it appears to have AKES stamped on the side. Is anyone able to identify this anvil
Black Frog
Probably LAKESIDE hardware brand, made by both Trenton and Hay-Budden.
ThomasPowers
Both lakeside makers are *good* anvil brands! Take a wire brush and clean the face a bit and do the ball bearing test. The ball bearing test will show if there was any post production issues like a structure fire. Also with nothing on the face or in the hardy hole tap the face with a hammer---it should ring. If it doesn't then there is hidden damage.
Crytin
Thanks guys. Just bought the anvil. It's got a good ring and a good rebound to it and It's in pretty good condition. It weighs about 78#. Got everything in that picture for $

JHCC
Just so you know, the pincer-like tongs at the bottom are for leading oxen around by the nostrils. Keep them out of reach of your spouse.

Crytin
So finally got some time to clean up my anvil. Turns out it's a 70# Lakeside anvil. These pictures are after 1 run through with a wire wheel, then some rust removed followed by a rinse and then a thin coating of WD40 Specialist

Hammerfall
According to my info Lakeside anvils were made by Trenton for Montgomery Ward, as their own brand. I have one and it is a very good anvil.
