April 17, 201610 yr Probably a 1830-1875 M&H Armitage MouseHole weighing 2.1.2 . Nearly ruptured myself picking it up from the trunk of my kid's Mustang, thought it was a 100lb'er. The trunk lift over height kept rising as the suspension unloaded while the anvil was raised. There is a I N stamped between the feet , under the horn. Sorry I did not have the dirt brushed off prior to taking the images, not knowing they were there. Any idea what it could indicate. There is some Roman number reference to either 1 or 1000 and 90 ?
April 17, 201610 yr There's no "N" in the Roman numeral system. Might be an owner's mark. Nice anvil, by the way!
April 17, 201610 yr Hey B&D, good to see ya......did it come with the operator and owner manuals?.....lol Dave
April 17, 201610 yr According to my calculations before, I've had my coffee, is that weighs 2.1.2 = 283 lbs. Good reason the Mustang sagged a little and you sagged lifting it. .
April 17, 201610 yr Author 2 X 112 + 1 X 28 + 2 = 254lbs ? This afternoon the high pressure , hot water washer will be used to lift all loose dirt and rust. May find more stamps. There could be a previous owners initials on there as well. I called 1-800-522-7448 however the manual is obsolete.

April 17, 201610 yr The "N" is there as a warning, it's what you're going to say if you lift it. "NNNNNNNNN!" Beautiful score, dust and surface rust aren't a thing, she's beautiful as she sits. Let us know how you like working on her. Frosty The Lucky.

April 17, 201610 yr Author Somebody was saying that those people who high pressure wash anvils are little better than the perverts who sandblast anvils ?
April 17, 201610 yr I draw the line between things that do damage to the usability of the anvil and things that affect the patina As a using tool the patina is *yours* to do with as you like. Doing damage to the anvil you are messing with a couple more generations of users!
April 17, 201610 yr Author Any chance that the " IN " was a factory stamp that indicated "inspected " ?
April 18, 201610 yr Author The factory finish on anvils? Did any manufacture do anything other than the "natural" finish of iron and steel from the tempering oven ?

April 20, 201610 yr Author not a pristine anvil by any means so the price wasn't taking advantage of widows and orphans. Good enough for the odd peice of metal work repairs when the kids wreck something else.
November 20, 20214 yr Did you ever get answer to IN mark? I have Mouse Hole 1.0.15/127 lb. The stamp on the foot under horn looks more like 7N and the 7 looks almost like a hatchet.
