phonedoc Posted December 31, 2007 Posted December 31, 2007 My neighbor is leaving his job of several years today, and opening his own office. I'd like to knock out a little "good luck" gift for him, but alas, I'm suffering from blacksmith's block. So, what say ye? Any ideas for a small keepsake? Thanks in advance. :D Quote
Paragon Posted December 31, 2007 Posted December 31, 2007 what kind of office? Aside from the usual card holder, I'll have to think about it. You probably want to make something that will be used. Quote
phonedoc Posted December 31, 2007 Author Posted December 31, 2007 He's an attorney. Useful would be good, but decorative would suit as well. Quote
caver95 Posted December 31, 2007 Posted December 31, 2007 He's an attorney. Useful would be good, but decorative would suit as well. A pitch fork?? a letter opener, but then again an agery client could use that. Something useful for an attorney. A forged check. Quote
Paragon Posted December 31, 2007 Posted December 31, 2007 Anchor? Just kidding I think a cool letter opener and if he is having clients at his office, something like a card holder. Could also make a desk organizer with built in card holder to hold pens and outgoing mail. Quote
keykeeper Posted December 31, 2007 Posted December 31, 2007 Being as it is for an attorney, a very heavy paperweight of some sort. Always a lot of wind blowin' in lawyers offices.:D Quote
phonedoc Posted December 31, 2007 Author Posted December 31, 2007 All good ideas. Thanks. I was expecting a bunch of attorney jokes and y'all didn't disappoint. He's a nice guy. Mostly just does family law and sits in on city council meetings. Rest assured, I still get a lot of digs in. Fortunately he's got a good sense of humor. Quote
phonedoc Posted December 31, 2007 Author Posted December 31, 2007 The legend says that only a used shoe, removed by a blacksmith will work. I don't have a horse here to pull one off of. :p Quote
skunkriv Posted December 31, 2007 Posted December 31, 2007 Is he a divorce lawyer? Maybe a nutcracker :D Quote
eburgblue Posted December 31, 2007 Posted December 31, 2007 Might be a little more than you want to do .... but how about a Justice Scale? Quote
standingwolf Posted December 31, 2007 Posted December 31, 2007 how about a horse shoe letter opener Quote

Ice Czar Posted December 31, 2007 Posted December 31, 2007 but how about a Justice Scale? appropriate or maybe hardware for a stock :p Quote
phonedoc Posted December 31, 2007 Author Posted December 31, 2007 not any legend i ever heard, including the one about why horseshoes are lucky. Can't remember where I got that. Meh, you know how legends go. Quote
easilyconfused Posted December 31, 2007 Posted December 31, 2007 I can't really add much but I made a pen holder out of a couple of short 2x2 tubing cutoffs and a piece of 1/4 plate that I flap disced and welded up. Not really blacksmithing but it looks like industrial art and doubles as a paper weight too. I don't remember where I read it but I seem to remember reading somewhere that horse shoes were only good luck if it was a 7 hole punched one that fell off of a horse at a crossroads. There also seems to be a disagreement over whether you should hang them up or down to either trap or pour luck out. Quote
Finnr Posted December 31, 2007 Posted December 31, 2007 A lost shoe must only be lucky for the finder. Can't see how it would be for the rider! Finnr Quote
Bentiron1946 Posted January 1, 2008 Posted January 1, 2008 I think that a nicely made scale of justice would be nice and you could put a card holder on the front of it too. Quote
hammerkid Posted January 1, 2008 Posted January 1, 2008 I think that a nicely made scale of justice would be nice and you could put a card holder on the front of it too. Yeah I agree! Quote
Hillbillysmith Posted January 2, 2008 Posted January 2, 2008 Horseshoes are for good luck. Why not make him one? I mean, you ARE a BLACKSMITH after all. :) Quote
