Bud in PA
I have a piece of 1/4" mild steel that I intend to use for my tuyere. I will drill a series of 1/4" hole in it. From what I gather from reading the forum it will not last long. Any suggestions on what material I can use to give me some longevity. The only thing that I can think of would be a piece of cast iron.
ThomasPowers
Be spending a lot of time drilling! I use a scrap piece of expanded metal and just change it out when it gets thin.

ThomasPowers
It's nice as I shape it to the bowl of my firepot bottom and can take it out and hammer it to remove any scale or flux stalagtites that form on it and replace it. I definitely get a lot more time on it than I do a tank of propane on my gasser, multiple times longer! So changing it out is less of an issue than changing tanks. MrDarkNebulah
I used an old circular sawblade for mine. I drilled some holes in and so far its been fine. Drilling took a bit, but i used a blow torch to anneal the steel first.
Michael Cochran
The one I use for charcoal is a used diamond cutting wheel off a 4 1/2 in angle grinder. Right now I just have a piece of 1x1/2x4 flat bar sitting across the air supply pipe. I have also used some stainless someone gave me that was full of 1/8 in holes. I have a habit of using whatever I have I can use that's handy.

arkie
I tried TWO of the 3/8" those cast iron drain gratings from Mc-Carr. Each one lasted about 3-4 weeks. Need something like 1/2". Finally made a grating out of 1/2" square steel bar. Works fine.
